Cloaking
Cloaking refers to technologies used to physically obscure objects, individuals, vehicles, and buildings from detection. Originally developed from early shield technology, cloaking devices use projected particle fields to obscure themselves from detection. This works by effectively allowing particles and waves (including the entire electromagnetic spectrum) to slip around them, preventing observation devices from detecting a cloaked object. Particularly advanced cloaking devices can simultaneously project holograms and false sensor data, making them very hard to detect. Without specialised detection devices, a cloaked starship can easily infiltrate even the most sturdy of defences.
When active, the projected particle field of a cloaking device interferes with projected energy shields and prevents their formation. Due to this, many starships and vehicles that employ cloaking technology are constructed with reinforced armour in lieu of shields. Cloaking fields have variable strengths, determined by the power of the field generator and the size of the field being generated. A field with low strength has more flaws to be detected by enemy sensors, and can interfere with the operation of hyper drives and onboard ship sensors.
Lythuric gas and yurantic crystals are both critical components of cloaking devices. Energy is passed through the yurantic crystals to generate the initial cloaking field, which is then projected out onto the particle field created by the emitter. Meanwhile, the lythuric gas keeps the field stable. Intense amounts of energy are required to maintain the field at useful sizes, such as a starship's reactor. Man-portable cloaking devices are extremely expensive due to this, and are only used by well-funded spies and special forces.
In addition to standard cloaking devices, the Kingdom of Yondarim and the Rototavuul High Suzerainty have developed so-called "psi-phase field generators". Rather than employing traditional cloaking techniques, these devices instead focus the psionic potential of their crews in order to partially phase the ship into the Shroud. Although this does severely affect the mental wellbeing of the crew, it is vastly more powerful than traditional cloaking devices. In addition, unlike shields, this type of cloaking does not impact the psionic barriers that are used by Yondar and Rototavuul ships.
