Skulari
A very religious and hardworking people that have a special connection to their land. They are skilled craftspeople, preferring function over decoration.
Culture
Shared customary codes and values
Skularins value hard work most of all. If someone is unable to contribute to society or provide for themselves that person is shunned and ignored. Religious belief in the Chaimor is ingrained into society.
Average technological level
Not much stock is put into technological advancement. If there is a problem Skularins will work towards a solution but are fine sticking with tradition. Scientific curiosity is not highly encouraged.
Art & Architecture
Skularins enjoy the arts, but Skularin artists are more craftspersons, preferring usefulness and structure over decoration and form. The arts are not discouraged as long as that art somehow has a practical application or expresses Skularin culture. So many work as blacksmiths, potters, or woodworkers.
Funerary and Memorial customs
A person dying is not to be a horrible occasion, it is more centered around celebrating their life and what that person did. On the day of the ceremony family and friends travel to their favorite place and burn the body, then the ashes are taken by each person present and spread around the area. People are to never be buried, they are burned and then their ashes dispersed in a specific location determined before death. If someone is not dispersed into the earth it is seen as bad luck. If a person dies they are gone and no longer have contact with the world.
Ideals
Gender Ideals
Men and women are seen as equals, both can become influential members of society.
Courtship Ideals
Men initiate courtship which usually begins at 17 for women and 18 for men. For courtship to become official the man must ask for the parents' permission. If the parents agree the couple wears simple matching bracelets to signify this relationship. This period lasts for about a year. After the initial inquiry, parents are very uninvolved in the courtship stage but become very involved when suitors come asking for permission to be bound. When a couple decides to be bound there is a year of ceremony and events that proceed the wedding. If a couple is found to have sex before official courtship the couple can be renounced from any economic assistance for the future, usually resulting in the couple being unable to marry.
Relationship Ideals
Ideally, a Skulari is only allowed one sexual partner for their entire life. At the ceremony, the bracelets are locked to signify the permanent bond between the couple. Divorce is illegal in all circumstances after binding.
Major organizations
Scylia is the cultural home of the Skulari. Skulari tend to be prejudiced against Illex due to past and ongoing wars. Vielans are seen as outsiders and in some cases savages because of their cut-off connection to the rest of the world. Illex are most commonly smiths, or barkeeps, due to the restrictions about them being in the army/government. Viela are usually seen as trade caravans and offer rare materials native to their home. There is little contact with Xylen but they are grouped with Ilex.
Skulari view Mantutines with favor. They appreciate their religious and cultural views. Skulari was founded after the rebel groups fought for their independence. In the current age, the Skulari do not hold the war against them due to their symbiotic economic and militaristic relationship.
