Ezar's War

A bitter 15-year war between the Kingdoms of Kanday and Rethem, in which two monarchs from each side and many thousands of men had died. The war ended with victory for Kanday.

Initial Engagements

682TR The war began when the powerful Company of the Copper Hook led by Akarata (Grandmaster) Ezar Zhirdoka, invaded Kanday without warning or provocation. The Copper Hook laid siege to Imiden Castle was forced to withdraw after the Order of the Checkered Shield sent a relief force. The Grandmaster of the Copper Hook appealed to King Puril I for aid. Ezar’s War had started.

682 to 688TR The armies of Rethem and Kanday clashed repeatedly but inconclusively.

Change of Strategy

688TR King Puril decided to embark on a plan to win by unconventional means. He launched a surprise seaborne invasion that quickly overwhelmed Sarkum and Hebon, both independent allies of Kanday. However, King Puril died from his wounds in 689, and Rethem's momentum was lost during the transfer of power to King Kabe, giving Kanday valuable time to respond and counterattack.

690TR Kanday recaptured Hebon, although King Andasin III was killed in the final assault. Kanday rallied behind their inspirational young Queen Eriel, and Sarkum was besieged. The recently arrived King Kabe found himself trapped.

692TR A fire broke out in Castle Sarkum, and King Kabe perished, and the castle surrendered.

693TR King Chafin, Kabe’s eldest surviving son, maintained the stalemate along the Kandian border.

Assassination

694TR King Chafin plotted to break Kanday's will to fight. He instructed the Sisterhood of the Crimson Dancer to assassinate Queen Eriel. The assassin was successful but was caught. Under torture, she confessed and implicated King Chafin. All Kanday was outraged.

Final Engagements

695TR Queen Mirelael succeeded her elder sister. Her furious armies seized the fortresses of Selvos and Menekod in the swift campaign.

The Peace of Selvos

697TR The tide has turned against Rethem, and King Chafin sought terms as only lands held by the Copper Hook had been lost at this point in the war. The Peace of Selvos was signed.

Aftermath

Kanday incorporated the minor kingdoms west of Aleath, and all the lands were taken from the Order of the Copper into their kingdom. Meanwhile, Rethem narrowly avoided a civil war.

698TR King Chafin had Ezar assassinated.

701TR The Order of the Crimson Dancer suffered the king's disfavor to the extent that they thought it wise to emigrate to Orbaal.

703TR King Chafin was assassinated in 703. The assassin was never discovered.
