Jinny Blackteeth, the Hag below the streets

The legend of Jinny Blackteeth is a tale told to scare young children or corrupt the poor.

One day, many years ago, Jinny Blackteeth begged on Laketta Street. She was a destitute, old, frail and had bones as weak as rotten wood, spending her days limping past the shops and business finding whatever charity she could find and nights sleeping under doorways for warmth. One cold winter night in the month of Morgat she huddled outside the shop of the rich baker Malfrin.

Malfrin was angry this vagrant was soiling his otherwise respectable business and pushed her away, she fell to the ground and her bones shattered. The cruel Malfrin laughed and shut the door on her leaving Jinny dying on the street. But the poor woman cried out for help and heard sweet a voice calling from the nearby well and in great pain crawled to it and fell in. All went black.

She woke in a pool of clear water next to a skeleton wearing blood-red robes with long black hair. The skeleton told Jinny that all the pain will go away, she will have unbreakable bones and the strength of a dozen men, all she had to do was ask help from the Master of Chaos and gift her soul.

The next day visitors to Malfrin's bakery were shocked to find his apprentices and family dead, necks broken and his bloody corpse in the oven with all his bones removed.

In the years that followed the well was said to be cursed and often blocked. Those who were sent down to clear obstructions reported seeing a large dark form and hearing the cackling of an old woman. The sole survivor of a work gang claimed he saw an old woman, with no skin just thick black bones and sharpened black teeth. He ran leaving behind his companions and the sound of screams and insane laughter.

The well was closed over and filled in. Some years later Laketta Street was demolished to make way for the construction of the Pamesani Arena. But still, visitors to the underground waterways report hearing the echoes of the laughter of an old woman, Jinny Blackteeth, the Hag below the streets.

Spread

The Priests of Morgath have contributed to spreading this legend among the poor asserting that the black-haired skeleton Jinny spoke with was Myrvria The Temptress, one of Morgath's most powerful demonic lieutenants. They use this as a cautionary tale to stay clear of the underground waterways and to demonstrate how Morgath can make the most humble powerful and grant their thirst for revenge.

It should be noted that the old Temple to Morgath, before it was demolished overlooked the well Jinny fell in.
