They learn that the King has banned looters, having executed some two years ago. The King sent an expedition to recover the remains of his ancestor, Verlind I, last year, but it was too dangerous. Several men died from falling masonry.
Quazzy sends her familiar over to inspect the decaying structure. It is probably just stable enough for a quick visit.
Part 3 - The Castle Constable.
To gain permission to access the tower, the heroes arrange an appointment with the Castle's Constable, Sir Barain Clamyns. Yureb forges a Letter from the Kaldorian Earl of Kiban, stating that he wished to recover a spyglass belonging to his ancestor, believed lost in the tower centuries ago. The Earl has hired the party to recover this treasure and asks permission to investigate.
Constable Barain is a sharp-witted, hideous older man who has served the current King and his father for decades. However, after careful inspection of this document, he falls for Yureb's skilled forgery. After consulting with the King, the Constable agrees to allow the party to search the tower and accepts the party's offer to attempt to recover King Verlid I's remains. He prepares a document granting them permission to enter and search the ruin. However, they are not authorized to loot. All treasures, except the alleged Spyglass, are the property of the Crown.
Part 4 - The Crumbling Tower.
The Heroes hire a barge and are dropped off on the ruin. They note some of the wooden floorboards are rotting and unstable, but no one falls through. There appears to be a partially flooded basement level, but this is blocked by fallen debris. Finding a stairwell down, and Athena and Yureb begin clearing out rocks, wood, and other junk to gain access.
Meanwhile, Quazzy magically transforms and grows gills, and webbed fingers, then start searching below the waterline. She finds holes in the walls, which gives her access to the tower's murky basement. The basement is filled to the neck height with muddy water, and after some searching, finds five crypts below the waterline. Athena and Yureb arrive after making an entrance. Examining the Crypts, Yureb finds one partially open and empty. The second has a few gems among the debris. He leaves the gems where they are. In hindsight, this proves to be a wise decision.
The third Crypt contains bones covered by rusty armor scraps. This was once a warrior. His greatsword is corroded beyond repair, his helmet is a strange conical shape, but his robust Belt with golden studs and buckles is in near perfect condition. Again the Heroes do not loot anything.
Part 5 - The Knight of Tirith.
As Yureb examines the fourth Crypt, the party telepathically hears a threatening voice telling them that they are not welcome and demanding that they immediately leave. The party explains their goals and presents the Document of Royal Approval to search the crypts. The voice is not happy but does not interfere. This Crypt contains bones, rusted remains of some jewelry, including what may well have been a crude crown. The body has a signet ring consistent with that of King Verlind's clan, and they find a plaque declaring this is to be the resting place of the King. The Heroes respectfully recover the remains and the evidence.
Sigwell
Yureb opens the last Crypt. However, the muddy water hides a
magical rune trap that explodes in his face blinding him. Athena casts one of her
healing spells, granted by the God
Agrik. The voice becomes angry, and sudden, in a burst of
Silver Fire, a tall warrior appears. Dressed in archaic armor and equipped with a huge greatsword. He is
Sigwell, a former bodyguard to King Verlid I, sworn to protect him in life and beyond. This warrior's valor and skill must have impressed the Goddess
Larani, and he has been raised to
Knight of Tirith, the Goddesses Larani's elite bodyguard.
Sigwell is offended that he has been dragged from his duties by a worshiper of his Goddesses mortal enemy, Agrik. Athena detects he is a very powerful Celestial and refuses to be provoked into combat. It was apparent this Knight was looking for a reason, any reason, to attack Athena and Quazzy, but being honor-bound, he was unable or unwilling to start a conflict.
In this Crypt are bones, a Staff set with a gem, a circular Metal Disc about 10-inch diameter (clearly of Earthmasters origin), and an ancient Silver Flute, of Elven manufacture. This is Desridaen Flute. The party departs, taking the Silver Flute and the remains of King Verlid I (with evidence of his identity) but leaving all the other treasures behind.
Part 6 - A Royal Audience.
King Verlid VII
The heroes return to Castle Burzyn and are quickly met by Constable Barain. They show him the bones and proof that they are from King Verlind I (the signet ring and royal plaque). He is delighted, and even the King,
Verlid VII, wishes to thank them personally. The King supplies them fine wine and gives them each a Gold Crown with his thanks. He says he will be writing directly to the Earl of Kiban to thank him as well.
Yureb can't resist pilfering something. His goal in life is to steal from all the Rulers on the Hârnic Island. He spots a silver, custom-built, and very expensive pipe-weed box within his reach. With a flick of his wrist, he acquires it, and fortunately, this high crime is not noticed by the King or the Royal Guard.
The party decides to leave the town immediately, travelling to the nearby Earthmaster Site ruin of Temular. They plan to activate a gateway to Anisha to take a shortcut home. Also, they hope to find treasures to compensate them for the powerful artifacts they have given up on.
