Part 1 - The Preparation
The Enchanted Short Sword Macalla
This Jarin made magical Short Sword is over one thousand years old and the ancestral sword of the Kings of Gemala. It was captured as war booty when Rethem captured Castle Sakum in a surprise attack in 688TR during Ezar's War. This weapon is named Macalla, which translates to Echo in Ancient Jarinese. It is believed to be stored in the King Chafin's private bed chamber in Caer Chaftar in the City of Golotha.
The Fake Identity
Yureb works with his criminal contacts in the Thardic Republic to create an alternative identity, Grenix, the Scribe. Months in preparation, this elaborate disguise is of a young and up and coming author specializing in biographies. The new identity is completed with plausible references and ghostwritten samples of his craft (transcribed using Yureb's Cursed Inkwell).
Castle Plans
Yureb attempts to get a Map of the Castle but can only source loose guidelines to what is present on each floor. Likewise, he could not get any meaningful clues as to where and when the food is delivered.
However, he learns that the Castle is protected by the Royal Guard, the Champions of the Golden Stag, supplemented by Company of Dead Men Mercenaries.
Introduction to the Nobility
Yureb spends weeks unsuccessfully trying to developed contacts in the Castle. He eventually started gambling with Sir Hugent Geelin, a member of the Queen's Guard and develops a friendly association. Sir Hugent agrees to introduce Genix to Sir Brunus Risalsin, the Lord Master Herald. The Herald has access to the King. If he can convince the King to allow him to write his biography, he would have access to the Castle and may be able to scout the location sword.
Part 2 Interview with the King
Day 1
When the King is next in residence, Sir Hugent meets with Yureb at the Castle Gates and escorts him into the Castle to meet with Sir Brunus Risalsin, the King's Lord Master Herald. The affable Sir Brunus sends and page to ask the King if he would be interested in meeting with Grenix. He is. Before the meeting, the Commander of the Royal Guard, Sir Aelfwik Borganau, interviews Grenix and checks him for hidden weapons.
At the Council Chamber, while waiting for the King, his Mother Apryne Risalsin arrives. This 70-year-old woman is no fool and smells a rat. Unimpressed by Yureb's clumsy babbling, she critically inspects the fake samples of his work. The documents are superb, and although suspicious, she cannot find a flaw with them.
King Chafin III arrives with Queen Erela. The Queen, who has no love for her mother-in-law, is likewise suspicious but eventually falls for the deception. The King agrees to hire Yureb to write his War Memoirs, a history of his epic military campaign, to put down the Traitorous Tormau Rebellion. He warns Yureb not to disappoint him like his last Scribe. It will not end well. He is commanded to stay at the Castle, under guard at all times, until the King leaves in three days.
In the King's Chamber, Yureb listens to King Chafin reminisce over recent battles and victories. The observant thief notices a distortion behind one of the tapestries and a hint in the stonework of a secret door. However, there is no sign of any Magical Short Sword. Yureb attempts to discreetly sight some papers and maps on the King's study but can't get a good enough view.
After he is dismissed, Yureb is taken to the Guest Quarters and notes a well-concealed peephole on the wall. He is being observed. Yureb quickly writes up the King's recollections as best as he can, using his Cursed Inkwell.
Day 2
Later the next day, he is taken up to see the King again for another interview. However, Queen Erela is in the Council Chamber, receiving spiritual guidance from a very unnerving priest. The Gurim is the supreme head of the Chruch of Morgath, and he wields considerable political power. He is very interested in Yureb, coldly scrutinizing his (disguised) face. The Gurim seems suspicious but does nothing. As Yureb leaves, his sensitive hearing picks out words such as Blood, Sacrifices, and Eternal Youth.King Chafin is a demanding taskmaster and inspects Yureb's work from the previous day. Luckily Yureb's draft document (aided by the Curse Inkwell) is impressive, and he is satisfied. The rest of the afternoon is spent taking notes. However, Yureb's attempts to humanize the King, in the Memoirs, are sternly rejected.
Day 3
This morning the King spends hours with Yureb but leaves early to attend a religious service in the Chapel, exiting the Castle by Ship. Although he is free to go, he stays on for another day using the excuse of interviewing the Lord Master Herald Sir Brunus for additional information. Then he departs the Castle that afternoon.
Part 3 - The Heist
Just before nightfall, well equipped and under an Invisibility Spell, he reenters the Castle, narrowly avoiding guards. He makes his way to the King's Chamber, currently occupied by Queen Erela, when a maid opens the door to empty a chamber pot. Before his Invisibility runs out, he rolls under the royal bed and is in for a surprise. The Sword he is looking for is secured there. It must be hidden there for easy access for the King in the event of an Assassin.
Pleased, he has to wait hours before the Queen finished writing letters, and eventually retires and goes to sleep. Yureb then stealthfully starts exploring. He finds a secret compartment containing a small fortune in jewelry, coins, and three Potions, behind the suspicious tapestry. The concealed door opens to a secret passage leading down. Yureb sneaks through.
Part 4 - The Escape
The secret passage winds down from the Castle's highest tower to the dungeon level, opening up to a small room, and Yureb's sharp eyes find another concealed compartment. This room's door opens to a small cave opening out to the sea, equipped with a rowboat. His Psionic talent of Detect Psionics and Magic finds a strong Neromatic presence emanating from one of the cave walls.
The concealed compartment is trapped and discharges clouds of Poisonous Gas. Yureb flees to safety. Once the gas dissipates, he finds two sacks containing a fortune in Silver bars, some Dwarven Gold Pieces, preserved food, and a terracotta idol of an Agrikian Demon. This must be the King's escape funds. Taking is loot (except the Demon Idol), Yureb flees using the Spider Climb special ability of his magical armor.
Part 5 - The Murder of Grenix
The robber remains undiscovered for several days. During that time, Yureb purchases a body, dead from multiple stab wounds, from the Thieves guild. He then fakes Grenix's murder. The body is badly burned and left in the alleyway. He then flees the city with his treasures around the same time the Castle goes on high alert. The robbery has been discovered.
