Session 116 - Ghost Ship

27th to 29th of Halane (Second Month of Autumn) 722TRThe story so far
Avon, a member of the elite Red Guard, has been ordered by Marshal Kronas Elernin to locate Senator Cyzo Udirel, who is believed to be traveling to the nearby Relmon Bay. The Senator has been missing for over a week in a dangerous region inhabited by the Tulwyn barbarian tribes, currently on the warpath.
Avon gets the impression that Marshal Kronas would be pleased if Senator Cyzo, a member of one of the Senate's opposing fractions, were to be "unfortunately" found dead. In this case, he would likely get some support from the Marshal for his own ambitions.
The continuation of Session 115 - The New Brother.
Location - Ramala Gap in the Thardic Republic.
Part 1 - Tracking down the Senator.
The Heroes make their way from Fort Talzos through the dense forest of the Ramala Gap. They are ambushed by Tulwyn Barbarians led by ferocious Turenkemri Berserkers. This Warband fought effectively in a surprisingly coordinated fashion, with each warrior supporting his fellow. They surrounded Sabretooth, forcing Acheron had to conjure magical Darkness to disrupt their fighting wedge. The barbarians were tough fighters but were eventually killed.
The party then makes its way to Relmon Bay and starts searching for the missing Senator and guards.
Part 2 - Harpies.
Part 3 - The Ghost Ship.
Senator Cyzo is on the coast waiting for the arrival of the merchant ship the Wooden Sparrow. It contains a valuable package. The vessel is late, and he wants to wait for a few more days lighting bonfires to get its attention. Two days later, it arrives, the Heroes spot it in the Bay at dawn. However, there is no sign of any crew. The Senator asks the Heroes to investigate, offering a reward if they retrieve his package. It is a small brass-bound box with his family crest inscribed on it.
The Avon and Acheron make their way over to the ship on a crude raft while Sabretooth activates his Miuruca Idol Infusion, grows webbed hands and feet, and casually swims across.
Part 4 - Yellow Death.
The Heroes make their way onto the ship's deck, finding skeletons laying among piles of ash. Avon enters the lower decks and finds patches of a strange Yellow Mold. He narrowly avoids bursts of poisonous spores. Searching around, he finds in the hull a large chest, and as he inspects it, rats, contaminated with the mold, frantically attack. Acheron and Sabertooth immediately help. Sabretooth, covered in spores, grabs the chest and wrestles it upstairs. The Heroes withdraw to the deck, dodging rats and spore clouds. They watch the mold withers and die, turning into ash, in the sunlight.
Inside the Chest is Senator Cyzo's valuable Box. The Heroes decide to attempt to cleanse the Wooden Sparrow of this Yellow Mold and try to save it. After some investigation, they find that the mold is easily destroyed by sunlight, radiant energy, fire, and saltwater. They spend the rest of the day decontaminating the vessel, deducing that the mold originated in the cargo hold, in barrels of ruined fruit and vegetables. It must have spread rapidly, possibly by the rats, catching the ship's small crew by surprise at night. The Heroes' efforts have some degree of success, and in their amateurish estimation, the vessel is in poor condition but serviceable. The Mold did not seem to rot or damage any of the salt-encrusted wooden structures or items on the ship. It seems to grow only on living or recently dead animals or decaying plant matter.
Senator Cyzo is extremely appreciative of the recovery of his Box and rewards the Heroes with silver. He makes his way back to Fort Talzos with Guardsman Oric and agrees to take Avon's Mule and trade goods with him back to the City of Coranan. Meanwhile, Heroes decide to sail the Wooden Sparrow to the nearest Port, the City of Aleath, and claim salvage rights. However, none of the characters have had any training in sailing a ship beyond observing sailors on several short voyages. Given this near-complete lack of seamanship and the bad weather at this time of year, they trust fortune and hope to learn fast. What could possibly go wrong?
