Session 208 - Elves of Darkness
General Summary
29th of Larane (Second Month of Summer) 724TR
The story so far
Jolanta, and her trusty bodyguard Blaine, are agents of the mysterious Order of the White Hand, hunting down unscrupulous mages and covering up magical mishaps.
This is the continuation of Session 203 - Fey Raiders.
Location - City of Tashal in the Kingdom of Kaldor.
Part 1 - Mission 15 - The Gray Wildlife
Jolanta and Blaine are asked to investigate this strange phenomenon and deal with it if it is a threat.
Location - Kanir Forest, Eastern Kaldor.
Part 2 - Gray Rabbits
Asking around in the local villages, the duo learns that some rabbits caught recently have been found that their skin and fur have turned various shades of gray. Also, their meat is flavorless, and the peasants have commented that they have seen gray deer as well but have not hunted any. Much too aggressive.
Following the peasants' directions, they enter the foreboding Kanir forest. After a day's searching, they are attacked by two large, gray Boars charging from the underbrush. These vicious brutes don't know when to die but they are eventually are skewered.
Following their trail, the characters spot a ring of trees devoid of color. Everything has turned various shades of gray. The source is soon evident; three strange, small, vaguely humanoid plant creatures stare at them. The Razor Leaves suck the joy of life from the land and heroes and attack with bursts of their razor-sharp, quick-growing leaves. By the end of the confrontation, they are chopped to pieces, and the heroes are covered in a multitude of fine cuts.
Searching, Blaine finds small silk bags containing large purple seeds. "What have you found?" he hears as a man armed with the longbow appears directly behind him.
Part 3 - Huge Spiders
The man, who identifies himself as Averitt Partas, has been observing the characters and impressed with Jolanta's magical abilities. She is just the person he needs. He identifies himself as a ranger of an organization that protects humanity from the dark magic of the Dark Elves or the Morsindari. Jolanta is aware of such a group, the Nithra-Dante. The Nithra-Dante and her organization, the White Hand, often co-operate.
Averitt explains that the plants are one in a series of nature-based horrors the dark elves experiment with, and he has tracked them to a nearby cave. He wants to deal with them quickly before they have a chance to escape. Jolanta volunteers to help.
The trio finds a web-covered cave guarded by three gigantic spiders. The Sword Spiders nearly eviscerate the heroes; only healing potions return them to a resemblance of fighting fitness.
Part 4 - Caverns of the Dark Elves
The trio enters the web-filled cavern; spiders large and small have to be driven off with fire. Two Morsindari warriors lie in wait. The dark elves attack and disappear into the shadows with their poisoned blades. Blaine becomes groggy with poison, but Jolanta's offensive attack spells prevail eventually. The elves are blinded and burnt to a cinder by Jolanta's intense light beams.
Clearing out the webs, the characters investigate further. A female dark elf lies in wait, conjuring a sticky web enveloping the chamber and dozens of giant spiders. While the still groggy Blaine is stuck in the web, Averitt battles the spiders and Jolanta, the dark elf woman. The woman suddenly transforms into a disgusting one-eyed, yellow, slime monstrosity. "A Yochlol," Averitt shouts, "One of the Demon Queen's demonic handmaids." The Yochlol slithers along the webs, touching the entrapped Blaine with one of its poisonous tendrils, rotting flesh and causing grievous injuries. He is dying. Jolanta redoubles her efforts, unleashing her lost powerful magic on the Yochlol, driving it back, while Averitt rushes to Blaine's side, narrowly saving his life. Eventually, the despicable Demon is reduced to a pool of yellow muck, but Jolanta is exhausted.
The indebted Averitt thanks Jolanta and Blaine for their help and offers them some healing potions. The Morsindari threat has been dealt with this time, but what will be the dark elves' next plot to destroy humanity?
