The Fens
The Fens is a marshy region on the north-western side of the Nephen River between the Fisen and Kiban castles.
The Fens are occupied by Fenlanders, a collection of free folk who prefer to live unrestrained by the strictures of feudal society. The Fenlanders have a loose confederacy of about 700 individuals living in a dozen semi-permanent small villages of 3 to 12 huts on wooden stilts or temporary encampments. They support themselves by hunting wild fowl, fishing, and foraging. They trade any goods they can not manufacture with trusted agents or contacts in the thieves guild.
The existence of the Fenlanders is not well known. They were founded by refugees fleeing the tyranny, terror, and slavery of Lothrim the Foulspawner's Empire in 113TR. Finding a place of safety with few laws, their number slowly swelled from outlaws or exiles from the losing sides from the periods of Kaldorian political strife. They preserve their way of life by remaining secretive, avoiding contact with outsiders unless needed.
Fenlanders are not religious, but many claim to follow Peoni or Siem. A pair of trusted, unobtrusive priests of Peoni minister to the spiritual needs of the Fenlanders, as do several local Druids of Siem. The Uthriem Roliri knows the communities and works with them to keep their existence secret from the general population.
Within the Fens, there is evidence of occupation by the ancient Jarinese people. Burial mounds, human remains, and artifacts are scattered throughout. Several mysterious monuments are also present, the most significant being the Rude Fingers, twin worked stones that are 12ft tall, positioned to resemble a familiar two-finger insulting gesture everyday folk use. The stones are engraved with complex, almost mystical swirling patterns and symbols. The monument has strong magical properties.
Some scholars believe a Barasi Points or Holy Grove is hidden under the muck.
Violet Butter Moth
The Violet Butter Moth is indigenous to the Fens. In the moonlight, suits mustard-colored wings glow strangely a magenta or violet. They are attracted to the strange magical monument, theĀ Rude Fingers.
