Valim's family were dye merchants primarily dealing with the Hamlen and Pallas families. They were betrayed and murdered by agents of the Earl of Ithiko and the Hamlen family.
He is plotting revenge.

Hansome dark haired man except for scar on the right side of his face and the loss of his eye.

Personal history
715TR - Was at an Inn in Avonel Manor with his family, when it was attacked by bandits. His brothers and father were killed and he just survived, albeit with grievous injuries. He later recognises some of the bandits, now outfitted as members of the Company of the Argent Wyvern in the employ of the Earl of Ithiko. He later discovered that Clan Hamlen was involved with the conspiratory.
Seeking revenge he continued his studies with Alchemy and developed a toxin designed to kill the mangroves that inhabit the Village of Deya, the home of Clan Hamlen.
718TR - He begins to secretly poison the estuary near Deya Keep.
720TR - His plan is successful, Deya fishery is devastated and will take years to recover. However a Priest of Morgath appears to have discovered his presence. Aided by Athena Pallas he escape and is give a job as Alchemical aid to the Earl of Tormau's Army.
Education
Trained as a Dye maker which uses some alchemy techniques.
Mental Trauma
Is consumed by revenge for the murder of his family.
