Elred Ilikrana

Elred Ilikrana is the first and illegitimate son of the poor miner Elred the First from The Halberd. Elred the Second had first son rights, but the other children (each bastards of different species) seemed to worm deeper into their father’s heart and time and lap. Apart from being a Miner, Father was a philosopher, spending his lifetime writing a giant book on the equality of all intelligent species. It was a best-seller but no one seemed to read it. Except Elred the Second who learned the ways and words of manipulating men. Elred was the second generation of miners, of poverty, and of being away from the ways of elves. When his father died—of poisoning, some whispered (some blamed Elred the Second)—Elred inherited his father’s estate, which was a worn pickaxe and the rights to his father’s massive tome, which no one bought now that Elred the First had passed. Whispers of the Second being a murderer sent him packing. He moved to the new city of Mythrite, where he became popular among the miners.   After work, he warps his father’s theories into class warfare, suggesting they should be the kings of the city, not the sellers. The miners are the real workers, the people who put their lives at stake. The monsters were sent from the gods to punish Mythrite for its unjust rule. As soon as miners ruled, the monsters would evaporate in the morning mists.   Most miners trust Elred. They laugh and share tankards with him at the pub, but a quarter of the miners do not trust Elred—often those who have friends outside their profession. They notice that his on-the-town clothes seem a bit too fashionable, too high class for a miner. He strikes out with a majority of the ladies but succeeds more than most men do. By the night’s end, he has a drunken woman holding on to his arm for support walking back to his small but well-furnished room.   The distrustful miners are put up with until they suggest that Elred must be in someone’s pocket.   Elred has three loyal bodyguards—Hjolnur, Qiven, and Darmond—who only mine three days a week yet support their families well. When beggars approach Elred or his bodyguards, they are told to work in the mines and literally kicked to the curb. When the upper-class visit Elred, he sneers when he lets them in, but their meetings are long and quiet and the windows are patrolled by his bodyguards.   He wants a son to carry on the legacy—that of division brings power, a power that one must always ride like a wave—but he has yet to find the right woman. She has to understand his plans and not interfere. A few women had to be encouraged to abort. One woman was met by monsters early in the morning. It is very hard to train women properly, but he only needs one.   --Trent Walters
