Argenti

“People say Argentians have no humor but this is untrue. In fact one need only spend a single winter to see the hilarious joke they play on everyone. While we freeze and our limbs grow cold, they simply carry on, without pause, and wonder aloud absurd concepts like why other Feroxians lack thicker hair, second skins, or extra cold blood’ all the while knowing other people don’t know the tried Argentian past time of dressing in layers.”
Refers to people from Argent, the western lands of the Feroxian Empire.   People from here are often pulled from Russian or Slavic aesthetic.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Argenti is the main language, often spoken between merchants and crafts men during working hours. However due to the Empire’s influence many grow up learning to speak Feroxi as well.

Culture and cultural heritage

The culture around Argenti people is one of struggle and success. The people of argent live in harsh, mountainous environments. During the time of their champion’s life they struggled against a plague of lycanthropy, only to be able to push back the hordes due to growths in technology.   Nowadays a person’s worth is often tied to their craft in Argent. What one does is usually enough to tell people all they care to know about you. Getting to know one deeper is often a professional courtesy, one not often extended to non-work acquaintances. It is the rare occasion that an Argenti person will open up to one who is not of the same occupation, and is considered a special intimate case if one does.

Shared customary codes and values

Many who are born in Argent are influenced or raised in the teachings of the Dawn Warrior. These teachings originate from Feodor the Wise’s book: the Tenants of Devotion - A series of thought exercises, rules for life, and techniques to pass on trades and skills one needs to succeed in life. Often reads like an encyclopedia and is constantly added to as knowledge and skills grow.

Art & Architecture

Heavily stylized runes and medieval pictographs (but anatomically correct). All art and craftsmanship is meant to be both beautiful and practical. Rarely does a piece not be made without considering both its functional use as well as its aesthetic integrity.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Children born in Argent are often presided over by a church official. When the child is born an announcement is made to the family and closest of kin. This announcement includes a name, sex, time of birth, weight, height, among many other technical affairs. The parents are expected to have at least a week (or the next Golsday) to spend with their child, during which family and friends should send gifts and praise. It is after this week that the parents are expected to show their children to family and friends in a “Showcasing” of sorts.

Coming of Age Rites

When a child is 10 they are expected to have a clear idea of what trade they wish to pursue. By 15 many are considered old enough to seek an apprenticeship.

Common Taboos

All professions are important, from the janitor to the merchant. To shortchange one’s profession is to attack that person’s soul and the society they are part of. It is not unheard of to find a person become a pariah to a whole town because they saw fit to insult a working class person on their craft or profession.

Common Myths and Legends

  • The Silver Table
  • The Dawn Brigade’s Charge

Historical figures

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Beauty is as much confidence as it is aesthetic. The color yellow and its variants are common in Argent. Many tend to follow traditionally dwarvish customs where those who are the most passionate about their craft tend to pursue and be pursued by those equally or more passionate. Paramount among all is how skilled one is, tends to gather the most suitors in the craft of their choice.

Gender Ideals

Argent is not a place where gender roles are clearly defined. Due to the heavy dwarvish influence, fields almost across the board are all populated by men and women equally. Be it merchants, smiths, scholars, politicians, or soldiers, one is just as likely to find a man as well as a woman in any given job.

Courtship Ideals

Men and woman are encouraged to pursue the object of their affection but only if they can prove they have something to offer. A tax scholar may not be the most capable of aiding a soldier’s job, but a blacksmith would. If the two are in the same occupation, then it is expected the two must first compete to see what each can bring to one another’s work. In addition, one’s occupational peers’ opinions can hold much sway in a courtship, sometimes more so than familial or friendly opinion.

Relationship Ideals

Relationships are built on a strong foundation of having something to offer others. Both people in a couple are expected to provide for one another. Couples are expected to grow and change with one another, if not romantically then at least professionally.
