Velkenmaath (velk-in-math)
The outpost of Velkenmaath sits in the Upperdark, the highest level of the Underdark, just below the surface of Faerun. This outpost acts primarily as a stopping point for slave caravans moving between the surface and the larger Drow cities deeper in the Underdark.
Velkenmaath is a distinctly multi-cultural outpost in the Underdark, housing a significant number of Gnomes which originally lived on the surface of Faerun.
Structure
Velkenmaath sits in a large cavern in the Upperdark, built as a series of suspended platforms attached to the cavern wall and a number of large stalactites. Sections of the cavern walls, as well as many of the stalactites, have been hollowed out to allow for more secure space. A large, mechanical elevator allows for easy access between the suspended Velkenmaath and the cavern floor.Points of Interest
Shrine of Lolth
Inside the largest of the hollowed stalactites is a small temple and shrine to the goddess Lolth, which acts as the seat of Ludimne's power and the primary barracks of the outpost.Genglys Trading
"Ancient Artifacts, Modern Savings!" Genglys Trading is a large, rectangular stone building built along the bottom of the cavern under Velkenmaath proper. Built after the emigration of Cogbanop Genglys and her group of Gnomes from the surface, this building acts as both Cognabop's workshop and a salesroom for magical and mechanical items and artifacts.Slave Pens
Built into the cavern wall on the far end of Velkenmaath from the elevator are a number of caves with wrought iron bars. These caves act as holding cells for the myriad slaves that pass through the outpost.Economy
Velkenmaath's economy is primarily fueled by the trade of slaves from the surface to larger cities and outposts deeper in the Underdark. The presence of Genglys Trading contributes a small amount to the town's coffers as well, with high-class Drow and the odd Adventurer making purchases of Cognabop's wares.
