Session XXIX : The Giant's Demise Report

General Summary

A Journey into the Mountains

Nature's surroundings

After the adventurers have had breakfast in their mansion, they head into the mountains north of Ban Grond following the river to travel to the Giant's Hold. As they ascend the mountainous terrain, they observe a decline in vegetation and the winds growing colder. Around noon they arrive at a grass plateau where Balin Thornbow attempts to hunt down a few goats. Missing his shots however, the goats run over a mountain pass to their left. The adventurers are left with a choice: Either they climb a ridge near the river to continue their journey via the river, or they stray from their original path following the goats. Shortly after discussing, they decide to take the goat path.   After walking for around half an hour, Oswald Fleetfeet nearly falls to his death before discovering many holes and crevices in the ground covered by moss. When looking down one that's particular deep, he notices a faint blue light coming from a tunnel like structure below. He sends his geest uil into the depths to scout the area. Upon closer look, the faint blue light erupts from a small Aria crystal devoid of most of it's magic. The owl finds itself in a tunnel and decides to fly north-east, before Oswald loses control over his familiar as faint cyan lights reminiscent of Magic Missiles kill the owl.   Although the adventurers are definitely interested in the contents of the tunnel down below, they decide to first venture onward to the Giant's Hold. After having crossed the "Crevice Plains" they find themselves in a sudden snow storm. John Doe discovers the storm is far from natural, deciding it must be magical in nature. The adventurers decide to take shelter in a nearby cave with Balin & Oswald taking the lead through the small crevice. Balin suddenly feels an urge to drop his weapons and run towards the dark-end of the cave as a loud screech is heard. Lighting the room, the adventurers discover this cave is home to a spider den, specifically Frostbite spiders. They manage to fend of the spiders rather easily and venture further into the den. They discover a large opening filled with webs and decide to take a Short Rest close to the cave's entrance.

The Obelisk

After having taking their rest, the storm has lain down and the adventurers decide to continue their journey. As they leave the cave, Nalan & Oswald burn up the webs with their fire and follow the rest of the party outside. John notices a large obelisk on a distinct hill in the distance and leads the party there. Before reaching the obelisk plateau, the adventurers need to make a steep climb. Being uninterested in physical exercise, Oswald uses his Misty Step to skip the climbing and sights a giant near the Obelisk : Rosar.

An uneasy treaty with the last Giant of Rhunaar

Oswald attempts to calm the hurling giant as she runs towards the little hobbit. Being partially successful, John seals the deal by ensuring the giant they mean no harm. The adventurers are allowed to continue closer to the Obelisk, if they leave their weapons at the ridge. A bit reluctant, all of them accept the deal and sit around the towering Obelisk. As they are being questioned by Rosar, they get the feeling she is able to tell lies from truth of them. This leaves the adventurers with no other choice, but to tell her of their murdering of Gnel, her twinbrother. They also tell her about their slaying of the Bloodfray Giant Naas, her elder brother. Overall the exchange is quite awkward but can roughly be summarized as followed:
  • The adventurers disclose they murder both her brothers, Naas & Gnel. This makes Rosar grieve although not yet violent to the adventurers.
  • The adventurers mention they seek knowledge on the purple liquid, aptly named Arium, which colors the surroundings of the Conflux Mountain.
  • As a response, Rosar tells the adventurers about the transpirings long ago on the island. The dark elves of the north led by Utherim were at a stalemate with the dwarven-human alliance of Ban Grond & Gildin. When the humans & dwarves learnt of the conflux of Aria & Lyrium below the Conflux Mountain, they reignited the war with the dunmer. It was then, Vex saw the opportunity to take the Conflux Point for himself and bathe in the Arium. Upon this mighty magic being touched, both the Aria & Lyrium sources erupted, causing the splitting of Mount Krembor from Rhunaar's mainland. Acknowledging this new threat, the three leaders formed a blood seal to trap Vex inside the Conflux point.
  • The adventurers then share their knowledge on the Uthramians (a.k.a "Red Armours"), who seek entrance into the Conflux Mountain. Rosar warns none should wield the power of the mountain and she seeks to destroy it so Vex never sees daylight.
  • As the adventurers talk about their friendly business with the goblins of Ban Grond, Rosar grows uneasy and asks the adventurers to vow before the Obelisk to destroy the Conflux Mountain together with her. In return, she'll offer her strength in the assault and collapse of the mountain. The adventurers vow to:
    • I, Nalan , solemnly swear to destroy the Conflux Mountain as long as I deem it the best strategy to keep Vex imprisoned. Nalan touches the Obelisk with his left hand.
    • I, Balin Thornbow , solemnly vow to do everything in my power to bring down the Conflux Mountain. Balin also touches the Obelisk with his left hand.
    • I, John Doe , swear upon my true self that I will do everything in my power to assist in destroying the Conflux Mountain, to ensure that no one else can missuse these powers again. John touches the Obelisk with his right hand
    • I, Oswald Fleetfeet , swear upon my true self that I will do everything in my power to assist in destroying the Conflux Mountain, to ensure that no one else can missuse these powers again. John touches the Obelisk with his right hand
  • Upon swearing their oaths, a shockwave goes through the adventurers' bodies with a small lightning symbol appearing on the hand with which they touched the Obelisk. Upon being inquired by Balin, Rosar explains the power of the sotrm will ensure their vows are kept. When broken, the Storm will take its revenge as it sees just.
  • During their chat with Rosar, they discover Sabulah, member of the Ban Grond alliance, is in truth Vex's sister. Rosar urges them to stay rid of the malformed dunmer or end her as they see fit.
Although not all of the adventurers are sure whether they should uphold their vows, one thing is evident to them: Vex should not be allowed to leave the Conflux Point.
