Charles Buciqueau (Charles Boo-See-K'oh)

"The staves hurt, Rudy - or so you say; but a fool dies a thousand ways on the battlefield." - Charles Buciqueau to his student, Rudy Rideau.
The Captain of Renaud Rideau's household guard and formerly the protector and sword tutor of Rudy Rideau. Known as the "Eagle of the Loire".   Charles Buciqueau is an unassuming man of average height, with very handsome features. As is typical of the men of the Loire Valley.   Stood out from a young age as the most capable fighter in Lord Rideau's ranks and quickly established himself as a Captain and Commander. Participated in numerous battles and skirmishes both across the Loire Valley and further afield in the service of his lord. Charles is well known to many of the nobility of France and is a source of pride for his Lord, who revels in his Captain's notoriety.   Charles, long a part of Lord Rideau's inner-circle, was the only choice to teach the young Rudy Rideau his sword skill. Charles, though a fine and accomplished warrior, insisted that Rudy learn his craft with only staves ("You will learn skill, only by getting hit. You will use only staves for sword practice"). For years, Charles beat the young man black and blue with the staves before it was time for Rudy to be dispatched to France for instruction at the Musketeer academies.   Fond of Rudy in a fatherly manner, Charles, who remains unmarried treats Rudy as if he were his own son, and boasts of his achievements to all who would listen.   Charles' wades into battle carrying a unique shield with an intricate black 'L' shown on a deep red field. Indicating his reputation as a fierce warrior of the Loire who leaves fields of blood in his wake. All who see this shield on the battlefield, know they fight with or against the Eagle of the Loire.   Charles' nickname comes from his ability to perform unorthodox or unexpected ripostes and counters to enemy attacks. Like an eagle, he keeps his sword 'in the clouds' until the time is right to deliver a blow. The eagle rarely misses its prey.
