Dhamtir dust storms

Severe dust storms spread frequently across the whole Dhamtir desert. Because the city of Iwatik is on the edge of the desert, the city is frequently exposed to these storms.   Dust storms of any severity can be dangerous and damaging to local environments due to the particulates in the air, but dust storms also produce something very powerful: sound. Gusts of wind roar and whip over flat expanses and populated areas where magicians live. These sounds can be harnessed by these magicians into performing spells and rituals that might be otherwise more difficult.

Manifestation

Dust storms form when strong winds, such as those after thunderstorms, and air currents vibrate the top lair of sand or dirt from the desert. The particulates crash into the ground and break up into smaller pieces, feeding even more bits to the wind. Dust storms can range in size, but can be seen by the naked eye as giant walls of dust moving quickly across the horizon.

Localization

The largest desert on Mutania is the Dhamtir desert located on the continent of Zige. While most of the surrounding area is underpopulated, the capital Iwatik sees them often. The storm winds are blocked by the Kugma Mountains from blowing any further to cause damage to the settlements of the Vesisape Yalisi further east.   When a dust storm has begun, some people from Iwatik will journey into the desert to use the rushing winds in their magic. It is rare for travelers to seek this source of magic, because while it is powerful it can also be temperamental and uneven. Magicians take on a certain level of risk when they use the natural elements as their sources of sound.

magical uses

Sound and intent are the ingredients needed to perform an astral magic spell or ritual. The sound of the wind can provide a baseline foundation for activating certain astral particles and make it easier for other sounds to influence them in other directions. Spells that might require long passages of written text to be spoken out loud might only require a certain phrase.   This can be dangerous. Casting a spell requires intent, but any noise could cause differences in how the magic is realized. There are stories of magicians fresh out of school in Yoozii who come to try their luck at taming the storms to achieve impossible spells. There are no stories of survivors.
