John, Baldwin II's son, sat on the throne for only a few years and reigned over Aachen during a time of plenty and peace. He claimed that the unicorn came to him in a dream and told him to seek the patch of winter roses where his grandmother had last seen the unicorn, and so he passed into the Detmold forests on a cold wintery night, seeking the ancient oak trees of the forest’s center. He vanished in the wood, never to be seen again. All attempts to find his father failing, the druids crowned his infant son King BALDWIN III.
