Vailian Republic
Vailia is a merchant republic that operates along the western coastline. It is well-known for maintaining neutrality in diplomatic spats, to the frustration of its eastern neighbors who have sought their help in the past. Vailia generally adopts a "wait and see" approach; extracting a promise from the Vailian Council is nigh impossible. But any nation that does so can expect a flawless follow-through. As such, Vailia has developed a reputation for dependability and honesty. The Council is more willing take an active role in matters of wider regional concern, where the repercussions could negatively impact trade.
The Vailian Republic is best known for its ore, precious metals, jewels from its partner and ally, the Dwarves of Shrouded Hills and furs, skins, and hides from Tanglewood. Vailia is the premier importer of exotic foodstuffs and textiles from the southern nations of Istan and Artorias.
Structure
Vailia is led by five families, the descendants of Defiance Bay's founders. The five family heads form a council which has absolute authority over all executive and judicial matters.
Public Agenda
The Vailian Republic currently has no enemies and want to keep it that way. Vailia is always on the lookout for a lucrative deal and is constantly seeking to expand its trade network. However, the trafficking of sentient races and killing-for-hire are strictly prohibited.
History
The story goes that two princes of a powerful mercantile kingdom from a far-off western continent were caught in the middle of a brutal coup. Their entire immediate and extended family was killed. Against all odds, the brothers escaped the continent with a small retinue of loyalists and landed on the west coast of the hitherto undiscovered land of Mystara. Having defied their fate of a bloody death, the princes called their new home Defiance Bay.
