Tanglewood Copse
The First Republic
The Free State of Tanglewood Copse is governed by the Tanglewood family, which has ruled independently over the last 250 years. Prior to that, Tanglewood was a vassal of Kingdom of Cumbria. The state retained and repurposed its noble titles after reforming its government. Therefore, the executive head is called the "Count" and the local elected representatives are "Barons".
Structure
Barons are elected every five years while the count is elected every seven years. Barons choose the new Count in a closed-doors assembly, theoretically voting according to the wishes of their constituency.
The elected Count then chooses someone outside the Tanglewood family as their second-in-command ("Viscount") who oversees the cabinet and is responsible for the day-to-day minutiae. Cabinet members are jointly appointed by the Count and Viscount.
Culture
Wodens are generally content with their lot in life and proud of their lineage. In fact, it's a point of pride for a Woden to be unrelated to the Tanglewoods because, on paper, they have they have a fair chance at becoming Viscount and therefore double the opportunity to attain a position of power.
Ultimately, Wodens believe that equal opportunity is a god-given right from Umberlee, the Defender. As a result, and because of the Tanglewoods' mixed human-elf bloodline, Humans and Elves get along comparatively well in Tanglewood Copse.
History
Tanglewood was a Cumbrian county until Count Lysander declared open rebellion 250 years ago, beginning the Tanglewood War of Independence. Many sympathetic elves from Artorias gladly journeyed from Mylanta's Hope to support the cause. After nine long years of bloodshed, Tanglewood earned its independence from Cumbria and became the first democracy in the North Artery
