Goliath

Goliath have always been particularly out of touch with the gods despide their father figure being Purphoros. So the change in the attitude towards the gods have left many Goliath unfazed. The biggest change for Goliath society is the loss of many glorious festivals and events scattered across the realm, which is hardly a life changing alteration.

Nevertheless, as a Goliath you'd most likely be indifferent to the pantheon and wouldn't be concerned about whether someone worshipped the gods publically or privately, but rather they'd be too much fuss to maintain relations with due to their problematic preferences and views.

Goliaths are considered to be hardy, determined warriors and tacticians so these qualities make them excellent survivalists and adventurers. Because of this, Goliaths can sometimes be blunt and closed minded, often looking down on those they view as weak.

So many find working alongside a Goliath hard work because they allow little leeway for adjustment.

This is not to say Goliaths are heartless and cruel, but rather their extreme historical living conditions up in the tallest peaks in Theros make them garner a tough external shell as death and loss formed a large part of their ancetry.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

At the highest mountain peaks-far above the slopes where trees grow and where the air is thin and the frigid winds howl-dwell the reclusive goliaths.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Every goliath has three names: a birth name assigned by the newborn's mother and father, a nickname assigned by the tribal chief, and a family or clan name. A birth name is up to three syllables long. Clan names are five syllables or more and end in a vowel.

Birth names are rarely linked to gender.

A goliath's nickname is a description that can change on the whim of a chieftain or tribal elder. It refers to a notable deed, either a success or failure, committed by the goliath. Goliaths assign and use nicknames with their friends of other races, and change them to refer to an individual's notable deeds.

Goliaths present all three names when identifying themselves, in the order of birth name, nickname, and clan name. In casual conversation, they use their nickname.

Gender Ideals

Goliaths see females and males as equal in all things, and they find societies with roles divided by gender to be puzzling or worthy of mockery. To a goliath, the person who is best at a job should be the one tasked with doing it.

Courtship Ideals

Many smaller races see a Goliath in their prime as the epitome of altheticism, albeit a little on the heavier side. So many seek to court a Goliath.

Relationship Ideals

Many races can interbreed, so it's not uncommon for a Goliath to travel to find love and to start a family even with another non-Goliath, but of course due to strict tribal culture and the dwindling numbers of Goliaths (living the Spartan-esque lifestyle doesn't bode well for infant life-expectancy) means that many Goliath parents can put strain and pressure on their children to marry other Goliaths, often leading to arranged marriages or forceful breakups - or even not recognising Half-Goliath grandchildren as legitimate.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Can speak, read, and write Common and Giant.

Common Etiquette Rules

Goliath work on a survival of the fittest mentality. If you are not cut out for the job, a Goliath will often be direct and blunt and this isn't considered rude in Goliath customs.

Common Dress Code

For many others, a Goliath may appear woefully underdressed for the occasion, especially when a harsh storm rolls in. This is because their natural resistance to the cold makes it possible for them to withstand much colder temperatures than any other race.

As a result many Goliath see little purpose for fancy dress or fashion as it generally serves no purpose or aid when trying to combat the sub-zero temperatures and violent weather conditions many tribes face.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Goliaths place a premium on self-sufficiency and individual skill. They have a compulsion to keep score, counting their deeds and tallying their accomplishments to compare to others. Goliaths love to win, but they see defeat as a prod to improve their skills

This dedication to competition has a dark side. Goliaths are ferocious competitors, but above all else they are driven to outdo their past efforts. If a goliath slays a dragon, he or she might seek out a larger, more powerful wyrm to battle. Few goliath adventurers reach old age, as most die attempting to surpass their past accomplishments.

A permanently injured goliath is still expected to pull his or her weight in the tribe. Typically, such a goliath dies attempting to keep up, or the goliath slips away in the night to seek the cold will of fate.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Among goliaths, any adult who can't contribute to the tribe is expelled. A lone goliath has little chance of survival, especially an older or weaker one. Goliaths have little pity for adults who can't take care of themselves, though a sick or injured individual is treated, as a result of the goliath concept of fair play.

Common Taboos

Interspecies relationships, while taboo, aren't rare. Many tribes are still very close-minded and aren't willing to accept the hybridisation of their hardy heritage

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Goliaths have no qualms with interacting with other races when outside of their own home turf. Afterall the sprawling city streets of the major Polis is where most races thrive and are best adapted to. It's only really Dwarves that the Goliath are glad to call their neighbours up in the mountainous tops
