Halflings

"Concerning Hobbits"

"Hobbits have been living and farming in the counties of Gaul for many hundreds of years. Quite content to ignore and be ignored by the world of the Big Folk. Mythoterra being, after all, full of strange creatures beyond count. Hobbits must seem of little importance, being neither renowned as great warriors, nor counted amongst the very wise. ... In fact, it has been remarked by some that Hobbits' only real passion is for food. A rather unfair observation as we have also developed a keen interest in the brewing of ales and the smoking of pipeweed. But where our hearts truly lie is in peace and quiet and good tilled earth."

Almost all halflings speak Common to converse with the people in whose lands they dwell or through which they are traveling.

Land Folk

As a land dwelling halfling, your kin grew up inland - likely on the Isles of Gaul, but possibly elsewhere. Either way, it is in your blood and family tradition to tend to the things that grow from the soil, to enjoy the sights of the country side. Breads and Ales fill your belly quicker than Fish and Wine. Your people tend to be sturdier and more stout, preferring leisure to any kind of work.

As a coastal halfling, your kin are familiar with the maritime ways. You are much more likely to have grown up in a more urban setting near the ocean. Water doesn't bother you, and neither does the bustling life of the city. Everyone you meet is your neighbour in some way, and everyone always has a story to tell. Being more industrious than your land cousins, you likely have a slimmer build and are more maneuverable due to your exposure to the busy streets of the city, as well as the need to keep your sea legs steady.

Civilization and Culture

History

There is a certain amount of uncertainty in the world regarding the origin and history of the Halflings, or Hobbits, of Mythoterra, for they are not keen on writing or recording information physically. Instead, they oft prefer to relay information verbally, through stories and tales, and make great storytellers.

The true origin of the Halflings is that they descend from the Dwarves who fled to the Isles of Gaul during the Great Dwarven Migration. The Dwarves of the early years of the Cataclysmic Era hid in every part of the world, typically underneath it, except for an expedition that made giant rafts and set sail for Gaul. These Dwarves were able to colonize the island, and luckily, escaped the terror and destruction of both the Giants and the Titans. They maintained a virtuous way of life, tending to nature, improving it where they could, and overall appreciating the simple things. Their time on the island and quick lifespans, along with a quite comfortable existence, caused the Dwarves to evolve over time into what are now known as Halflings and Gnomes. It appears their extremely virtuous lives also expanded their lifespan, with the peoples of Gaul likely reaching their hundreds, where the Dwarves of the world tend to only live into their forties or fifties.

Hobbits developed in the southern part of Gaul, which in 1217 is known as the Downs, where their simple lives of tending to livestock and fishing softened their features, hardened their feet, and made them quite wholesome and nimble. Through the sheer virtue of their simplicity as beings, it seems the universe repays them in often unexpected ways, and things tend to line up just right, even against the odds. Their history and culture is as simple as they are, with not many noteworthy events happening in their long and simple history. The men of Lourdes peacefully annexed their island for nearly a century during the time of the Six Kingdoms, however this hardly affected the day to day of most Halflings, with most of the Lourdian presence being in the north where the Gnomes reside. Many Hobbits were recruited, however, as spies and diplomats during the War of Six Kingdoms. The lives of the hobbits who live in Gaul is and has always been typically one of much leisure and comfort.

During the rule of the Lourdians, it wasn't uncommon for halflings to leave their home and move to the larger world. For this reason, there is a minority population of Halflings and Gnomes in the nation of Lourdes, and they can be found in other corners of the world as well. They are fairly good at integrating into the society of the big folk, and even in their world, tend to keep to the traditions of simplicity known to their people.
