God
There are many things worshipped as gods in the world of Nailara. Whether it is a cult worshipping an archfiend, a sleepy town venerating the water elemental of the nearby lake, or a vast international church dedicated to a goddess of battle, mortals tend to find those more powerful to elicit aid. To most mortals, these are gods.
They take innumerable shapes across the cosmos, from vast creatures burrowing through the earth, to a lone wanderer that might appear no different than the average mortal. Some are powerful enough to grant mortals great power, and be the object of worship. Others are simple creatures, uninterested in doing anything other than what they have been doing for the past ten thousand years.
To the more educated, there are also the 'old gods', imbued with the grand and uncontrollable magic of the Old Ways. Old gods defy classification. They were not born or created. They came into existence as they are, willed into existence by the Ancient Ones who created existence.
Despite their sometimes great power, gods are not are omnipotent - gods have been killed, and mortals have risen to godhood. Many gods have vast power over a specific aspect, but may be weak in other ways. A god of water could be a force capable of destroying a coastal city on a whim, and be nearly powerless on land. A god of grain and farming may have little chance of defeating a soldier in single combat.
Even more varied are gods motivations. They rarely crave the same things a mortal does, and some spend millennia maintaining their own domains with little attention paid to the outside world.
Types of Gods
Though gods tend to defy classification, that doesn't mean that mortals don't try to classify them anyway! Here are some of the most common terms when gods are discussed.God
The least specific or clear term, almost any being of great or unique power fit to be worshipped by mortals might b considered a god. This could be many things - an archfiend worshipped by demonic cults, an elder water elemental venerated by sleepy lakeside town, or an old god whose church spans continents.Ancient One
The Ancient Ones are the most powerful of all, and assumed to be the most powerful creatures in existence. The true scope of their abilities is not fully understood - it is said they shaped the universe and the natural laws that govern it. If such a thing is true, they could make or unmake the very fabric of reality itself. The Ancient Ones rarely ever interact with mortals, or even other gods. Most do not grant divine powers to other creatures. They are Ebium, who created space. Etione who created time. Aldt, who created the laws by which life could blossom. Qamara, who seeded the universe with life.Old God
Creatures created directly by the Ancient One Qamara are considered Old Gods, and predate all other life in the universe. Not all are necessarily powerful, but they tend to be unlike anything else. Many of the other gods that exist today were directly created by the Old Gods.Minor & Demigods
Demigods and minor gods are the most common sort of god. Many are the children of more powerful gods, or even ascended mortals. They are nearly all immortal, and boast some great power or skill beyond their mortal peers. Some demigods are even able to grant divine powers to mortals. Though powerful, minor gods are rarely able to affect things without being present. A demigod of fire may have complete and effortless control over nearby flames, but unable to affect things beyond their immediate area.Meta examples: A minor god associated with smithing could create marvels of incredible detail and quality with ease. A god associated with smithing might be aware of someone who prayed for their guidance. They may inspire their smiths from afar, aiding them in crafting masterpieces. An old god associated with smithing might have been the first entity to have ever crafted something out of metal. They might have spent the last ten thousand years crafting the same object over and over. An Ancient One associated with crafting would have created the very ability to have creative inspiration. Without them, no creature, mortal or god, would be able to craft something new.
