Vampirism
Vampirism is an old magical curse that dates back to the earliest recorded history of mortals. Ancient paintings depict those transformed into hunters of the night through dark rituals. They are considered a type of undead by most.
The exact nature of those afflicted by vampirism varies, but by nature they feed on the living, and are weakened by the sun. There also exist 'vampire-spawn', those who were not granted their whole powers by the one who created them.
Transmission & Vectors
Some stories speak of vampirism being contracted through the bite of another vampire, while others speak of simply consuming the blood of a vampire. There are many conflicting tales on how exactly it is spread, though it is clearly unlike other diseases.
It appears possible for vampirism to be passed on to children, though as undead it is quite difficult for this to occur in the first place. The children of vampires are known as Dhampir, and can be of any species.
Causes
Legends say that the vampiric curse originates from the demon prime Astratha, goddess of fear and revenge. A fraction of her blood flowing in the veins of those afflicted with the curse grants these magical powers - and their corrupting influence.
Symptoms
The symptoms and abilities of vampires vary, and it is believed that vampirism affects each individual slightly differently. But across the many myths and stories around vampires, their weakness to the sun seems to be a common factor.
