Potato
The humble potato is a starchy root vegetable, native to Tolhera, first found in the Scalehide Swamp, growing among the marshy floor. As the early Mortals first experimented with agriculture after AngelDeath, it was found that potatoes were naturally very hardy, and easy to grow in any climate. As a result, their cultuvation was slowly spread, to the areas that would later become the Jarldom of Värmod, and then later on Roslin Duchy. During the Second Crusade, and the imperial conquest of the Belrose Province, the potato was discovered by the Custodis Pansophical, and identified as a potential staple crop. After much experimentation and practice by local farmers and the followers of Cognitiosis, the Empire God of Knowledge, potatoes were publicly identified as a great source of nutrition, even in very cold climates.
In modern times, the cultivation of potatoes is very common, and they have become one of the three staple crops, alongside Barley and Wheat. They are especiialy common in the Northern Wastes, where they were introduced by the Custodes Pansophical to help stabilize the regions food supply, to some effect.
They are most commonly eaten boiled or in stews by most folk, though those who are wealthy enaugh to afford to cook for pleasure more than need, also cut them into bits and fry them in oil, adding spices when done for a tasty and crispy treat or accompanyment to a meal.
