The Void

The Void; also known as Shadowfell or The Realm of the Dead, was a shadowy plane of existence, one that ran parallel to The Mortal Plane. The Void mirrored the mortal plane, appearing as a complete replication of Naneth in most areas. However, this replication was doused in shadow and death, creating a realm only suitable to lost souls and undead creatures.

History

It is unknown when The Void was truly created, or became active, although it was active during the Age of Creation, as a parallel realm to the Mortal Plane. One of The Eres; Kelemvor, resided in The Void, forgoing his chance to create life alongside his brethren on Naneth. Instead, Kelemvor became master of his own realm, free from the future problems of the other Eres.   After The Betrayal, Eldath, Silvanus, Torm and others, joined in combat against The Dead Three. Once again, Kelemvor and The Void stood neutral, truly not showing favoritism towards any side, alignment, or cause but his own. Soon, The Dead Three were defeated, banished to The Underblaze. The remaining Eres on Naneth decided to leave, or fill smaller roles within the Mortal Plane, giving freedom to the life they had created, away from the will of the gods.   It was then that Eldath gifted onto Kelemvor a special purpose; the safekeeping and shepherding of Naneth's dead. The inhabitants of Naneth, once passed, would have their souls travel into The Void, where Kelemvor, now known as The Great Guide or The Judge, would show them the path to Empyrean or The Underblaze. As for souls those that remained completely neutral in life, they were rewarded with eternity within The Void. The Void and Kelemvor have continued this task throughout the ages.

Inhabitants

The main inhabitants of The Void are the millions of lost souls, those that neither showed evil or good nature in life. They exist within the Shadow Realm as faint wisps upon the wind, blending amongst with the shadowy landscape. These souls often retain some nature of their former selves, and those with unfinished business in the Mortal Plane can occasionally turn into ruthless spirits, hungry for revenge upon those that may have wronged them. Because of this, The Void is home to many dark spirits, ghosts, specters, shadows and otherwise, all looking for passages to return to the land of the living.   It is also said that Kelemvor occasionally deems himself worthy of passing judgement and punishment upon mortal souls. This fate is usually pressed upon souls that Kelemvor finds especially interesting or evil. These individuals are punished with the plight of an undead eternity, usually becoming werewolves, vampires, or worse. Furthermore, these creatures frequently find their way back into the Mortal Plane, either by way of summons or magical escape.

Access

Because of The Void's parallel position beside the Mortal Plane, access and travel between the two realms is quite possible, especially by those with an affinity for magic of that nature. Powerful warlocks, sorcerers, and several types of wizards are known to frequent this dimension. Though many that travel take great care to make the trip short, as The Void is extremely dangerous and still mostly unknown. Among the exceptions to these rules may be warlocks and creatures that have made Kelemvor, or some other powerful spirit, their prime patron in exchange for incredible power.   Additionally, travel into The Void does not seem to be an act only perform-able by the intelligent higher races, as many animals and creatures have shown a natural affinity for crossing between realms. The greatest example of this are the Hags of Naneth, creatures that have dedicated themselves to Kelemvor or another spirit, but still reside in the Mortal Plane. They seem dedicated to the steady delivery of souls to their masters within The Void.
