Werewolf
Werewolves are a type of unnatural monster found in Naneth. They are often found living in wild forested or mountainous areas, though occasionally choose to live in close proximity to small outlying towns or villages. This is because werewolves consider humanoids the most satisfying type of prey. Most werewolves have turned feral, succumbed to the beastial effects and cravings of the lycanthrope curses. Though most are feral, some may retain their humanoid nature, or even posses the ability to reshape back into their natural form. This is usually the case when lycanthropy is passed down via bite or ritual.
Most werewolves in Naneth have entered into existence via The Void, as is the case with many of the world's dark creatures. Because of the Void's close proximity to the The Mortal Plane as a mirrored dimension, creatures such as werewolves are able to pass between without much trouble. Occasionally, werewolves may be summed from the Void, the actions of a Wizard or Warlock.
Because of their nature as a tortured soul, living a cursed or afflicted life, most non-true werewolves worship Shar. Through dedication to the Shadow Mother, they hope to receive her blessing, giving them an easier way to control their transformations.
Classification
True Werewolves
True werewolves are inhabitants of The Void. This type often finds their way to Naneth via dimensional bleeding between the Void and the Mortal Plane. Because all werewolves need to be created from a humanoid host, most true werewolves are descended from lost travelers of the Void, transforming into vengeful beings whilst inside the ghostly wasteland. True werewolves quickly lose their past values and personality, becoming feral and losing the ability to transform. True werewolves may also be created via reproduction between true werewolf parents.Afflicted or Cursed
Werewolves may also be created through the act of a bite or ritual. The bite of a true werewolf can quickly lead to the victim suffering from lycanthropy. Without experienced medical or magical attention, the victims will likely become an afflicted werewolf. This type of werewolf often retains it's humanoid form, and has the ability to transform between each. However, it is extremely difficult to control on demand, and most cannot control their transformations, often doing so while under great stress or enchantments, such as a full moon. If an afflicted is not cured, over time it may become feral, just as a true werewolf would.Notable Werewolves
- Kiril Stoyanovich: The pack leader of a group of afflicted werewolves in Barovia. Kiril often hunted for children around the settlements of Krezk or Vallaki. The children would be used as replacements for lost members of the pack, the strongest specimens undergoing a ritual to the Shadow Mother, transforming them into werewolf cubs. Kiril would be killed by the Saviours of Barovia during a raid on his den.
- Emil and Zuleika Toranescu: Emil and Zuleika were mates, living in the werewolf den in Barovia. They assumed control of the pack when Kiril Stoyanovich was killed, promising never to hunt children again. Emil very briefly entered Ravenloft, becoming a prisoner of Strahd Von Zarovich. He was set free by the Saviours of Barovia.
