The Smoldering Embers.

The Smoldering Embers is the inn and safehouse of the town of Plungehome.

Purpose / Function

The Smoldering Embers serves many purposes within the settlement. When it was built, it was the first building to be erected outside of the mineshaft's entrance. It serves as a way to defend the mineshaft, as well as a way to provide the workers with food and comfort for their role in acquiring coal.   Additionally the Smoldering Embers also serve as a safe house when the Mists roll in and cover the residential area of the camp. As the only building made out of stone, it is the only one which can be effectively sealed when the Mists roll in.

Architecture

The building's outer shell is made out of stone, with its foundations made from wooden beams. The stone is held together with an earthy mixture which is akin to clay which has served to keep the building together, even with its exertions.   Inside, the building is made from wood, with wooden floors and its interior being retrofitted with wood to provide a homelier atmosphere.

Defenses

The Smoldering Embers has two layers of defenses. First, the stone walls, and then another room which shuts the access to the mines. In times of crisis where there is a risk of breaching the outer layer of the building, the populace retreats to the second one and closes it, sealing access to the mineshaft.

History

The Smoldering Embers were rumoured to be built by survivors of the tragedy at Cragmouth.    It is believed that the few people who arrived to this place found shelter in a cave and then found coal within its depths. Lighting up the coal to make a fire which could be dimmed without extinguishing its warmth made a few more survivors trickle in. After this, a stone edifice was erected to protect the fire and the access to the mineshaft. This building was made to ensure that the nascent hamlet could not only provide a hiding place for the residents, but also succor to those toiling away in the dark to ensure their people stay warm.    Over time, this building was expanded to provide housing for the Quiets whenever they come for supplies as well as any travellers which may be passing by, however foolish the journey.
