Xurroth Ruins

Once a thriving town just under two thousand years ago, Xurroth now stands as a mere shadow of its former glory. An unknown catastrophic event caused poisonous substances to leak into the groundwater, corrupting all the freshwater sources the town relied on. It was abandoned soon after and left to fall into ruin, the water in this area remains unsafe to consume still to this day.   Crumbling stone walls and remnants of ancient structures dot the landscape but despite the desolation, the ruins have found a new purpose not just as a pivotal intersection of trade routes, but also as home to a small community that serves the frequent travelers and traders. Many areas of the town have been converted into secure campsites and trading grounds to better protect against local dangers and threats.   Fresh water is an essential need that must be fulfilled from surrounding settlements and almost half of the permanent residents at the ruins are tasked with transporting it in. Hunting parties and a small group of farmers keep a limited but constant stock of fresh food flowing year round, several well-trained mercenaries provide security as well as frequent visits from the Crestguard as the king understands the value of maintaining and protecting this site.   These mercenaries also are known to lend their services to any traveling south where Kenku raiding gangs are prevalent, the fees for these services help cover the cost of any repairs or equipment the camps might need.   An active effort to purify the groundwater is in full swing with many creatives competing to solve the crisis fueled by a hefty reward from the city as an incentive, with hopes that one day this once great settlement can be rebuilt.
