XP Progression: RAW vs. Modified

For our campaign world, we use a modified XP progression chart that is more difficult than current 5e rules, and more similar to 1e / 2e rules. It is of the DM's opinion that progressing through levels too quickly makes the game less fun and challenging.
Per Session Minimums
  • Per "session" means that a minimum range of XP is awarded if XP is not obtained by any other means. Essentially, this XP is rewarded for being able to navigate the perils of their day, negotiate with others, make progress towards something even if slowly; XP for not dying.
    • Character Levels 1 - 4 : 150 - 300 XP per session
    • Character Levels 5 - 10: 1,000 - 2,500 XP per session
    • Character Levels 11 - 16: 6,000 - 12,000 per session
    • Character Levels 17 - 19: 15,000 - 20,000 per session

  • Another way to award XP is to take the DC of the situation or session, and multiply it by 10 - 100.
