Nereida

The Manta Throne has not always been in power, but anyone living under their rule has learned to pretend as if it has always been this way. The modern-day Empire stretches across the vast expanse of the continent of Sek, all the way to the Northwestern shore to the port-city-turned-artificial-magic-capital, Nereida. While its capital city, Balkur, sits further to the South and holds more military power, the empire favors this city-state to the North for its abundant natural resources and defensible location. From here, the ruling families are able to study and manufacture arcane tools to ship out across the coastline. They manage their ongoing "projects" through a system of advisors and ambassadors, namely the Twin Crowns -- Hiro and Hydra. Thankfully, Nereida has seen very little of the ongoing war, and it likely never will. To say that Nereida is a peaceful city, though, could not be further from the truth.

Geography

A jagged cliffside ravaged by seastorms, winds, and waves, all barely held together by the most advanced arcane practices in the Empire. The rocky city is fortified to the East by a 6 foot thick wall, and protected from the West by the monstrous Ligean Sea.   The city sees the sun for all of two months out of the year. The rest of the days are an onslaught of sea storms, high winds, and rumblings under the earth. The local superstition is that everyone must offer something to the sea before a voyage, or else they will bring down another storm on Nereida and waste their few precious hours of sunlight each day.

History

Conquered by the Manta Throne in the year 2600, the city-state of Nereida learned to flourish under the growing Empire and become the arcane capital of the West coast. Their rich history since then has been marked by a surge in magic manufacturing, extensive archiving, and rumblings of a restless cult worshipping a non-existent demigod off the shores of the city limits. Most notably, the Nereins have welcomed the grandchildren of the Emperor -- the Twin Crowns -- as their newest diplomats and heads of operation in arcane experimentation. Their increasingly questionable patronage of the chief mage, however, has invited speculation as to the Empire's intentions in the ongoing war with the Northeast. The rumors have conglomerated into an infamous title for the Crowns' pet -- The Mad Alchemist.

Tourism

Nereida trades people as much as it does manufactured goods, and thus keeps up a healthy tourism sector. Dedicated ambassadors oversee welcoming parties for foreign diplomats and traders, while academy students hold demonstrations of the city's arcane capacity. At every opportunity, Nereida seeks to entertain her guests and maintain a fruitful relationship with the Empire.
