Adsalam

The Tabaxi of Adsalam boast one of the least-understood nations of the world. Until relatively recently, they were a loose collection of mercantile city-states lining the Sul-Harik Desert. However, a few of the city-states began to purchase controlling interests in naval ventures, and seemingly out of nowhere, their ships began flying the flag of what they called “Adsalam.”   A number of Gimmelan scholars have attempted to find the capital of Adsalam and figure out its governmental system; however, they inevitably end up being passed between caravans across the Sul-Harik Desert, on promises that the next caravan is going to the capital. The prevailing theory is that this is a long-running joke that the traders of Adsalam like to play on outsiders.   That said, there are various Tabaxi who claim to be diplomats for Adsalam, and deals made with them seem to be honored more often than not, so the guess is that somewhere, there is a central authority empowering these agents.   The nation contains a racial majority of Tabaxi, but Kenku, Tiefling, and Humans form substantive racial minorities. In all, money is power and respect within Adsalam, so all manner of races may be found within Adsalam's cities.

Values

Following the bond between the Tabaxi race and Rataxa, the Deceiver, Adsalam boasts a society that enjoys jokes, pranks, and satire. Despite a reputation for patriarchal views on gender, the society is surprisingly egalitarian; powerful merchantwomen are just as common and respected as the powerful merchantmen of Adsalam.   Cultural heroes often overcome overwhelming odds through cleverness, and many variations of Robin Hood-style myths speak to a surprising esteem for personal charity; indeed, though beggars may be found on Adsalam streets, rarely do they want for food, company, or shelter on festival days.
