Faith
There are no gods in New Z'hrat, not anymore. No one had expected the realm's deities to be killable, but when the Architect fell in a fight with the Winged Radiance, it sent shockwaves throughout the very fabric of society.
For thousands of years, the gods had been seen as the advisors of the people. Many people loved and worshiped them, creating faiths and fan clubs and holidays and works of art as displays of love and devotion. But an equal amount of people chafed under their stifling, arrogant, and out-of-touch influence, rebelling against uncaring parents, refusing to bend the knee to ancient magical celebrities.
And once the latter group realized the gods could fall through the careful application of extreme power, the Serpentine War provided an excellent opportunity to finish off the weakened gods and finally set Z'hrat free.
In the modern day, there's no benefit in worshiping the gods, and those that choose to are often seen as backwards and wasting their time on silly superstitions.
History
- The gods arrived long before Year 0, creating the world and its first people. It's thought that the early people lived alongside the gods in supposed equality.
- Year 0- the earliest parts of the city and the first guilds were created in what is now called First District, inspired by the desire to emulate the almost familial cooperation that the gods displayed with each other.
- 5- The Order of the Scribes is established as a religious organization under the Oracle of Erudition.
- 2150- the cult of the Gilded Lady, precursor to the Church of Gold, is recognized as a new state religion. This deeply angers most of the gods, who do not consider the Lady their equal.
- 2309- The gods often fought, taking sides in interguild conflicts. But the Fire Wars and the inter-guild skirmishes regarding containment of splices inspires the first actual violence between the deities. The Architect dies in combat, defending the existence and reputation of their guild, the Z'hratian Engineering Coalition
- 2495- The Serpentine War causes the deaths of The Adjudicator, the Celebrant of Fortune, the Hand of Evolution, the Winged Radiance, and the Verdant Mother.
- 2496- After the Serpentine War, a core group of interguild rebels plots to kill the remainder of the weakened gods, and the last one falls in 2498. The Wayfarer and the Ardent King likely leave Z'hrat, never to be seen again.
- 0 NZE- The Treaty of 241st Street delegitimizes (but does not outlaw) all deity-centric religions, although the Greensoul, Order and the Church are still recognized as guilds, despite their religious foundations.
- 105- The Gilded Lady is killed by a strike team of unknown assassins, and the Prophet of Platinum soon takes her place as head of the Church.
Execution
Most of the people who knew the gods or were affected by their deaths have now died themselves, so most modern worshipers do so to continue the traditions of their ancestors and communities. What this worship looks like depends on the god in question. Some examples:
- Followers of the Architect build and create things and dedicate them to their deity.
- Followers of the Celebrant of Fortune host parties and make offering of meals and gossip, keeping her up to date on all of the family drama and events.
- Followers of the Oracle of Erudition teach others about niche information they've found in honor of the god.
- Followers of the Silent One show gratitude to the city's undead laborers and make shrines to their ancestors.
Observance
- The four seasonal High Holidays- mark annual milestones.
- The Day of Silence- to honor the Silent One's protection from undead and supernatural horrors.
- Tithe Day- the Church of Gold's holiday, where offerings are exchanged for talismans that supposedly offer prosperity and spiritual protection.
- Celebrant's Day- the equivalent of Valentines' Day.
