The Greensoul
White flowers bloom in a dryad tree, easily twenty stories tall, and in its shade lives a small, close-knit community living in harmony with nature. Those hawknights that take to the sky and patrol aren't soldiers, the dryads will inform you, but guardians of our community meant to keep the cold cruelty of the world outside of the thorny walls.
The Greensoul is New Z'hrat's guild dedicated to farming and the preservation of public parks and green spaces, but they're more than that- they're a family, living in peace together as brothers and sisters and children of the Verdant Mother are meant to. The Greensoul is light and life and love, and the arms of the Mother are open to all.
Structure
The Greensoul prides itself on having no leader or power structure; they claim that all are equal in the eyes of Nature and the Verdant Mother. However, the dryads always seem to be the first ones to know exactly what Nature wants and pass that knowledge onto the other members, and they also command the hawknights.
Culture
- The Greensoul values community and conformity, generosity, and treating all living things with care.
- The Greensoul tends to shun the pursuit of uniqueness and anything they consider "unnatural," including modern fashion, genetic manipulation, many medications, and non-heterosexuality.
- At their best, they are kind and gentle people who try to bring a decent quality of life to as many people as possible, but at their worst, they're a manipulative cult that keeps their members inside strict physical and ideological boundaries.
Public Agenda
The Greensoul is responsible for farming, animal husbandry, and tending for the parks, but over the years, their sphere of influence has grown. They also handle mental health, holistic/alternative medicine, and caring for the orphans, homeless, and elderly.
Assets
The Greensoul aren't particularly gold-wealthy, but they own a lot of land and are responsible for the majority of the city's food production. They also have a fairly large standing army of hawknights.
History
- Founded as the Farmers in Year 0.
- Renamed to the Greensoul in Year 12, after taking on the responsibility to care for orphans and the elderly.
- Attempts to wrest control over Z'hrat's military from the Sentinels and fails.
- After the re-legalization of the study of mind magic for psychiatric use in 1118, the Greensoul picks up most of the remaining scholars, but after increased legalization and intense ideological disputes, many leave the fold in 2110.
- 0 NZE, the Treaty of 241st Street reaffirms the Greensoul's role as a guild.
Demography and Population
The Greensoul is one of the largest guilds, population-wise, thanks to the hard work of their evangelists and their alliance with the Order of the Scribes allowing indoctrination- oops, I mean, "teaching about nature, ecology, and the critical farming industry"- in Basic schools. Greensoul life is portrayed as being peaceful and idyllic, and people who are fed up with New Z'hrat's frustrating and unfulfilling capitalism are often tempted to join. Also, many families who are at or below the poverty line are more willing to join a cult that promises to provide for their needs.
Overall, the Greensoul is primary consisted of humans and people with fey ancestry. Many members are poor and have large families.
Military
Greensoul communes are protected by hawknights, archers and spear-users mounted on large hawks. Unbeknownst to most members, the hawknights are also tuned towards inside threats, and are often used like secret police in stricter communes.
Religion
The Greensoul has a relatively-high amount of religious members, many of whom still worship the Verdant Mother.
Foreign Relations
Despite their anti-education stance, they've historically had decent relationships with the Order of the Scribes. Recently, the Third District Greensoul has formed a tentative alliance with the Church of Gold to help defend against the Sentinels' overreach into the neighborhoods.
Laws
When a new member joins the Greensoul, they sign a pact with a dryad, swearing that they will live in harmony with their neighbors and the environment. Critics, and anyone familiar with the bargaining nature of the fey, will comment that the rule is deliberately far too vague and open for interpretation.
Very few people are ever severely punished for breaking the rule; most punishments are usually things like extra duties on undesirable cleaning shifts for gossiping about a neighbor. The Greensoul is surprisingly, suspiciously peaceful. Some theorize that the dryads still have access to mind magic.
Agriculture & Industry
The Greensoul specializes in food production and farming. They produce most of Z'hrat's grain, fruits, and vegetables, and are the only ones with enough land to reliably produce animal products such as meat, milk, and eggs. In Tenth District, the Greensoul is famous for their unique sweetflower honey, which is said to have healing properties.
Education
Most Greensoul parents do not send their kids to the Order's Basic school, instead preferring to train them to work on the farm and in the home. A significant percentage of second-generation Greensoul members are severely lacking in standard education or entirely illiterate.
Infrastructure
Most Greensoul communities live on the farms around a dryad tree, and the majority of these are apartment buildings grown out of the tree or perch in the branches like enormous birds' nests. This is done to minimize the impact on the land.
