Oligarch

The Oligarch is the leader of the Collective, a powerful force in the Nexian economy. They work closely with the Mayor, the Council, and the other pillars of the community such as the Head Master and the Guildmaster. The Oligarch has the largest number of people they represent, but is arguably much less powerful than many other pillars. Merchants don't operate with the same efficency and unity as the Hoppers or the Masters, after all. Nor do they possess nearly as much collective coin and influence as those two groups.
Oligarchs are typically elected by the union members, although in times of strife an Oligarch can step down and personally select their replacement. They are always a respected member of the community and a well-known name to Nexians even before their ascent to the top.
The role is not without its drawbacks, as the Oligarch must recuse themself from all their businesses, as to avoid any conflict of interest. They are also often the subject of great scrutiny alongside admiration. They are blamed for the economy, whether it be good or bad and whether their policies had any say in making it so. Most merchants have no desire to become the Oligarch and sometimes, on rare occasions, will refuse the position if selected for it.
