Leo Tyeen
Leo Tyeen was born in 1947 in Forgecard Falls to Maund Tyeen and Aigun Yabmiola. A former Yub preistess, Aigun broke her vows of chastity when she fell in love with Maund, not only casting her out of the priesthood, but causing both parents to be disowned by their families for marrying themselves, rather than having their marriage arranged, in accordance with Yub tradition. For his part, Maund broke off the arrangement of such a marriage.
A year later, Leo's sister Ayan Tyeen was born. Her right arm ended just below the elbow, which her parents thought may have been caused by a reaction to the medicine Yabmiola was given to treat an illness she had during pregnancy. The illness later came back and got the better of her, killing her before Ayan's first birthday.
Though Maund Tyeen's fisherman's salary didn't give his family much to live on, they found comfort in each other. Maund himself was a loving father who always managed to stretch the funds to ensure that his children were not only fed and clothed, but also had plenty of toys and games. Leo quickly developed a love of reading, and his father made sure he received new books every birthday. Once Leo and Ayan were old enough to attend school, their father took jobs on longer fishing trips--sometimes a couple of days, rather than just a single one--to improve the family's finances. This left Ayan in the care of her older brother, and the two developed a closeness. Leo took his responsibility to Ayan very seriously and tended to be distrusting of adults who would check in on them--determined to prove he was good enough to care for his sister.
When Leo was seven years old, his father died in a fishing accident. Fearing officials from the Florarovan government who might come in and split him apart from his sister, Leo convinced her to leave behind what little they had in order to stay away from the adults. For a year, they lived on the streets of Forgecard Falls, getting meals from temples to gave to the poor and sometimes stealing them, though Leo always did the stealing, never allowing his sister to get involved in such things.
One day, Leo stole money from Altiane Bakayo. When Altiane caught Leo, she invited him and Ayan to her home, offering them a warm meal and clean clothes. Though Leo didn't trust the woman, he went at the behest of his hungry sister. Upon arriving, Leo and Ayan found a group of men gathered around the table in Altiane's kitchen, and immediately became less trusting. But as promised, Altiane offered them food and chairs away from the adults, with an easy exit, if they should decide to leave. It was then that Leo learned Altiane was herself a thief. She and the men gathered in her kitchen worked together to steal from Florarovan officials--usually valuable pieces of Antaran history that had been taken by the Florarovans to keep in their homes or offices. At the thought of targeting the wealthy who did nothing to help himself and his sister, Leo found himself wanting to participate. He and Ayan visited more and more frequently, until they accepted Altiane's invitation to stay. No official papers were ever signed regarding the adoption, and no one ever asked for them.
Life at Altiane's was more comfortable than life at home. A secretary for a Florarovan official herself, Altiane had a better salary and regular work, which meant Leo and Ayan found themselves in a nice neighborhood with all of their needs and more cared for. They returned to school, reconnecting with old friends, and came home to help Altiane and her crew plan their heists. At first, Altiane didn't want the kids involved, but when Leo pressed, she allowed them. They learned to pick locks, be lookouts, and retrieve things from tight spaces. They became even more valuable to the team when they discovered their Magical abilities--Leo the gift of access, allowing him to lock and unlock doors, and Ayan a connection to fabric, which allowed her to sew clothes that never rustled and hid the wearers with elaborate illusions. Though Ayan took quickly to Altiane and accepted her as a replacement mother, Leo could never quite trust her. She was, after all, a criminal.
When Leo was eleven, Altiane and her crew came up with the most daring heist of all--they intended to steal an expensive jeweled necklace from the princess of Antarand herself. Though their heists normally targeted the Florarovan, not the Antaran, the necklace had been a gift to the princess from a Florarovan diplomat. The goal was to steal the necklace and send it to an orphanage with a forged note from the princess herself offering it for them to sell and use the money as needed. It was an important heist for Leo and Ayan because it would help care for kids like themselves.
The plan was for Ayan to dress as a servant in the household, which would allow her access to the necklace. Unfortunately, she was soon found out, as she was too young to actually have been working there. After being caught, Ayan was briefly jailed, but Altiane refused to come forward as being part of the heist, believing that if she didn't, the king would have no choice but to let the child go. She was right. Nevertheless, the damage had been done. Strange stares now followed Leo's sister. The temple priestess suggested she don brown--the Yub symbol of criminals--and even Leo's friends treated him differently, forcing a schism in the group. He longed to help her, and though he would give up anything to do so, there was little he could do.
Three years later, Ayan suggested attempting the theft again--but this time she would not dress as a member of the household, but as the Antaran princess herself. Ayan had discovered in this time a striking resemblance between herself and the princess, and so she made a dress fit for a princess with the illusion that would hide the minor differences, such as her missing hand. Again, the plan was foiled, this time by Audeni herself who came face to face with the thief in her bedchamber. But rather than become angry, Audeni was impressed by Ayan's boldness, as well as her skill in sewing, and applied on the girl's behalf to Faraday School for Wizards. When Ayan was accepted, Audeni invited her to live in the royal home, where she could be properly prepared for school. Again, Leo did not trust the princess, as he had never known anything good to come of the wealthy. More importantly, he worried that Ayan no longer needed him, and for that matter, perhaps no one did.
