The Northern Passage

The Major Ocean's Graveyard

CW: violent storms, violent death
Off the coast Zenxon, strong northern winds blow from the polar tip of the Major Continent, whipping the narrow passage into a frenzy. Here, icey storms can freeze the masts of ships attemping to sail through the treacherous waters or drive them into nearby rocks or blocks of ice, tearing through their hulls. The wreckage from past disasters litters the ocean floor beneath. This is the graveyard of the Major Ocean.

The storms that form here are so ferocious that there are virtually no cities on Zenxon's northern coast. The ruins of the ancient Stone Sprite City indicate that the sprites who live here learned long ago the danger of building too close to the ocean. Even the trees here show the signs of being battered and broken by the cold winds. Only the hardiest survive.

It takes great courage, or perhaps stupidity, to brave these frigid waters. Even the Mermish sailors, masters of the ocean, avoid the area. Foolish treasure hunters have been known to seek out the wealth of past ships, but few return with the riches they sought. Most don't return at all. Here, only the ice dragons of the Major Continent travel unscathed.

And yet, in these northern waters, among the ice and the storms, lie the Sun Islands, safely nestled amid warm water currents. Protected on one side by mountains, the Sun Islands are the home of the Cove Sprites, who ride these warm currents like highways in and out of their haven. Master navigators, only the Cove Sprites know how to locate these secret roads that allow them to bypass the frozen graveyard and bring them home.

I love the juxtaposition between the Northern Passage and the Sun Islands. The first couple of paragraphs made me feel cold just reading them.
