Kvatch

Situated atop a great plateau, the city of Kvatch overlooks the majesty of the Gold Coast.   Founded in the early First Era as a monastery in contemplation of the mysteries of Akatosh, its defensible position and proximity to overland trade routes attracted more and more settlers. By the fourth century, the city became the capital of a Colovian kingdom, which would have a pivotal role in the downfall of the oppressive Alessian Order.   True to its roots, the city is famous for its great Cathedral of Akatosh and plays host to the knightly Order of the Hour.

Destruction

Unbeknownst to its inhabitants, Kvatch was the host of Imperial royalty. The bastard son of Emperor Uriel Septim VII lived a humble life as a priest of Akatosh at the Cathedral. When the Emperor and all his heirs were assassinated in the early hours on the morning of 27 Last Seed, 3E 433, the barrier between Mundus and Oblivion dissolved. To prevent its restoration, the very first gate of the horrific Oblivion Crisis opened directly in front of the entrance to the city. In the first brutal surprise attack, the daedric forces of Mehrunes Dagon razed the city and set it ablaze through the night. By the grace of the divines, the Hero of Kvatch entered the Oblivion Gate and shuttered it, and went on to rescue Saint Martin Septim and a band of survivors before assaulting the castle.   The rescue of Martin was pivotal in aborting the apocalyptic invasion of all Tamriel, but they were too late to prevent the total destruction of the historic city, or the assassination of Count Ormellius Goldwine or his family. With only a small camp of survivors and the nobility of the county decimated, the duties of the county was divided between Skingrad and Anvil for the remainder of the Crisis.

Restoration and the Synod

In honor of Saint Martin's sacrifice which ended the Obliivion Crisis, the duties of County Kvatch were taken over by the Bishopric of Akatosh, thus drawing the region into the direct control of the Imperial Cult. Nestorius Varus, a colleague of Martin's who was away at the time of the attack, has since risen to the position of Archbishop, and has made it his holy mission to rebuild the county in the image of Aetherius.   Over the last decade, the city's reconstruction has been steady, with the foundations of a promising new city that will surpass the old in scope and in cultural wealth. When the Imperial Cult got permission from Potentate Ocato to call for major reforms, Varus called the meeting of the clergy in his project's capital. This reformation hearing grew in size and scope, and was quickly organized into the General Synod of Kvatch, where debate over appropriate changes to doctrine in light of the recent disaster and the loss of the Emperor's bloodline has caused the Synod to extend from an event into an ongoing arena of epistemological debate.
