Negral City
Nergal, derived from the ancient human word for darkness, is the seat of power in the north and the city of the Dark Queen, the supreme ruler of Maroka. The name itself evokes associations with malice, melancholy, and death. In the known world, Maroka is notorious as the Dark Dominion, characterized as hellish, brutal, and totalitarian. It is known as the Black Wave that swept across the frozen north, conquering the Hyperborea and instilling fear in all who encountered it. The empire's might was such that it crushed the once-unconquerable northmen, the Barbarians, and defeated the invincible plainsmen, renowned for their exceptional swordsmanship.
Now, all that power is under the control of the Dark Queen in the city of Negral. Her palace, the grand Onyx Temple, stands tall, constructed from the finest black marble, adorned with intricate gold detailing. At the heart of the palace resides her throne, popularly known as the Obsidian Throne, which serves as the ultimate symbol of her power.
A peculiar feature that sets Negral apart from all other cities is the absence of an obelisk hovering above its skyline. While obelisks are a common sight in many cities, Negral's unique characteristic is the lack thereof. This absence adds to the enigmatic atmosphere surrounding the city, further fueling the rumors and legends that surround Maroka.
Unlike Akilla, Negral does not rely on defensive walls for protection. Instead, the city is surrounded by a series of towers manned by lone sentries, providing a vantage point for observation. Since its founding, no force has ever dared to attack the city, further enhancing its aura of invincibility.
Marokan architecture follows a Gothic style, featuring ornate structures with tall spires. Gargoyles are a common sight, while some depictions showcase eternal battles between angels and demons, reminiscent of the fabled blood wars in Baator. The Marokans make use of locally available black marble and obsidian glass, abundant in the region. As a result, most structures adhere to a similar design, characterized by stunningly vivid and monochromatic ornamentation in black and gold.
While there is no uniform building code for housing, many citizens choose to model their homes after the design of the Onyx Temple. Temples dedicated to various deities are scattered throughout the city, although the Onyx Temple itself serves more as a central figure within a colossal cathedral-like structure, housing the Dark Queen and her princesses.
Aside from stone, gilded black marble, and obsidian, iron and steel are commonly employed in construction. In fact, the Onyx Palace incorporates more metal than stone, and the roofs of most structures are made of sheet metal treated with a special acid, resulting in a dark blue or black color that protects it from rust.
For outsiders witnessing the city for the first time, the abundance of steel used in construction would be shocking. Negral is rich in precious stones and metals, such as iron and gold. Maroka serves as the primary source of adamantine in the continent and tightly regulates its trade, further bolstering its economic power and influence. The absence of the hovering obelisk above the city adds an air of mystery and uniqueness, distinguishing Negral from all other cities in the known world.
