Distal Ocean
Geography
The Distal Ocean (so named by Union surveyors) is a body of water covering 18,173,666 sq km. It is a mostly cool ocean, though a subset of it in the southwest, where it approaches the eastern bound of the Central Ocean and the Kaaqaakipareii land bridge, is much warmer, owing to the shallower depths. It is also freshwater, as most of the mineral content of runoff and deep-sea geothermal vents is contained within the Central Ocean. Known as having typically rough seas (aside from the southwestern sea), it is much choppier in the west as the Distal Jetstream builds up momentum. Its interaction with the northern polar vortex, particularly in the west, can produce severe arctic storms.
