Mercy
The Mercy was a 28-gun galleon, originally of the Tenth navy, commissioned by Denby Mott at Dartwright Dockyard and launched in 829WA. It was a significant but dubious innovation at the time over contemporary ships, renouncing the high fore- and after-castles prevalent in earlier Tenth galleons. Drastically faster than the galleons that came before and after, Mercy and its sister-ships Grace and Succour proved themselves in races and slaloms but performed poorly in military service.
At only 294 tons burthen with a maximum complement of 160, Mercy was too light to serve as a cargo ship, too cramped to transport troops, and too lightly armed to serve as naval artillery. Without a high forecastle she was prone to quick, jumpy turns that required exceptional skill to control. One on one she was a fearsome craft; but naval encounters do not occur in such a way, and as a result she had no practical function in an operating navy. The Grace and Succour were broken up in 833WA, but the Mercy was reportedly sold to a private collector at Mott's personal direction.
That collector was Gavinus Carey, who took it on in place of the Mounted Stag, which had gathered such a reputation that it was dangerous to berth even in Nessardine.
Crew
Captain Carey's Command
Gavinus Carey assembled a crew that ranged between 90 and 130 over the course of his command. Generally speaking, the sailing and pirating crew did not participate in the landside adventuring, and the adventuring crew generally did not assume command duties with the exception of the senior staff of Carey, Beulah Garland and Torwall Ignus. The core of the adventuring crew, which did ebb and flow over the years, began with Carey, Garland, Ignus and Lamark, joined later by artificer Joshua Bridle, sorcerer Lucida Baldelli and at length swordswoman Carlita Alto and cleric Marina Sitwell. Bridle and Alto were killed in action and Lamark frequently resigned and rejoined the crew based on his pay status; otherwise the core of the crew remained intact until being formally disbanded.Captain Ignus' Command
Carey sailed the Mercy until his wedding in 847WA, on which date he sold her to his first mate and former prisoner Torwall Ignus, who set sail with Garland's longtime officer of the deck Ibsek Ragush as his first mate.Current Status
According to Reghyxesh, Torwall sold the ship along again in 863WA, presumably for scrap. It is, by this point, quite obsolete. The Mercy could reach 12 knots in high winds, but modern Tenth frigates can break 14 knots without the Mercy's steering difficulties -- at three times the tonnage.
