Ammit

Overview

While the ammit are celestial beings, they are feared far more than they are revered. These enormous hybrids of crocodile, lion, and hippopotamus are presumed to have come from the chimeras of Ogygia in ages past, but now they reside almost entirely within the corpse-realm of Ersetu. There they endlessly hunt the twisted rakshasa, devouring them and returning their souls to the cycle of reincarnation. Somehow they are entirely immune to the warping madness of Ersetu, though some theorize they have already been corrupted by Ersetu’s influence.
The ammit are not restricted to hunting only the rakshasa; their hunger and fury extend to the undead and evildoers among the living, as well. The ammit consider themselves judge, jury, and executioner all at once, and the only method they use to purify evil is to swallow the source whole. This does, in fact, purify all kinds of curses and destroy the undead, but whatever an ammit swallows typically does not survive to enjoy its purified existence. Ammit who emerge on the surface rarely concern themselves with mortal law, and their presence may be as much a danger as it is a blessing.

Though an ammit’s presence on the surface is rare, Itharan paladins who swear oaths of vengeance or clerics of the grave are often inspired by or in direct service to an ammit, and they conduct themselves with no less ferocity.
