Horses and mules are well-known to Ogygians, but the variable terrain of marshlands, dense forests, and cliffs makes them unreliable mounts to the average traveler. Instead, the varanus has become the mount of choice to mercenaries and travelers. These six-legged monitor lizards are similar in size to horses, but where they excel is their ability to swim across lakes and rivers and their skill in climbing steep cliffs and even gigantic trees without sacrificing the land-based speed of a horse in a sprint. Domesticated varanus have about the same temperament as a loyal hound, and they are now prolific among the working class of Ogygia. Some nobles may choose to ride horses regardless, but that choice is about the same as walking into battle in ceremonial armor.
