Ibuso, the Faceless Mask

Divine Domains

Thievery

Thievery is a way of life to those who follow Ibuso's teachings. Wealth, possessions, and even relationships are meant to be transferable, particularly from those that have much to those that have little. As a lower-class believer, the way to find favor in Ibuso's eyes is to rise out or your situation through skill and cunning - the more difficult the odds, and the bigger the stolen prize, the more deserved the increase in status. If stolen from, as a believer, Ibuso has set his cunning gaze upon you, urging and challenging you to prove your ability and worth.

Debauchery and Lust

Debaucherous acts are often considered worship of Ibuso, even if the active participants do not profess belief. In some cultures across Omiralon, acts of bodily pleasure and discussion thereof, (outside of procreative purposes) are seen as shameful and reprehensible. Along the Radiant Coast and within the Free Cities, however, such acts are commonplace, and in a smaller group of settlements, even encouraged. While cultures outside Ibuso's sphere of influence condemn the carnal acts, they often overlook the more widespread side of Ibuso's domain - Drink. All manner of spirits and brews are encouraged in the life of a follower of Ibuso, and it is often this aspect of the lifestyle that allows Ibuso to gain a foothold in a previously unbelieving culture.

Theater

Theater, to the followers of Ibuso's teachings, is both an undertaking that upholds the ideals Ibuso sets forth, and a way to connect with the world outside the faithful. While the practices and culture of theater have spread outside of Ibuso's influence, the productions created by Ibuso's followers remain the most emotive and compelling. The ideals of the trade are further ingrained, however, and a follower's appearance and persona are carefully curated and protected commodities. The more well-known Theatre troupes that follow the tradition of Ibuso's teachings pride themselves in the fact that every city can recognize the troupe's name, but can't single out a recurring member, not for lack of memory, but due to the repertoire of personas each member can make use of.

Tenets of Faith

  • All possessions are mutable. Your lack is a challenge of your potential.
  • The mortal coil holds no sway over those who delight in every moment. Release your burdens.
  • Your actions and demeanor are judged by the world around you. Make them memorable.

Holidays

The Festival of the Mask is an ancient celebration commemorating the creation of Ibuso's most revered written work. While all agree the work is a play, none can agree on which it was, and theater troupes perform their most treasured work during the festival, both in hopes that Ibuso will take notice of their performance and sway others into agreement that it is the aforementioned work done by Ibuso's hand. Celebrated for 12 days in the first week of Maelem, (purportedly the time it took for Ibuso to write the work) the Festival has an air of levity and passion. Participants are encouraged to don masquerade masks while in public, even during raucous and open promiscuity. Further traditions vary, but nearly all settlements that collectively observe the festival have some form of these gatherings.   Tachn, or FreeSpeaker's Day in the Trader's Tongue, is a three-day festival held starting the night of the first full moon of Hoelis in Camum. Participants spend the holiday in and around local drinking establishments. Singing and drinking from mid-afternoon until dawn is typical, with the more devout participants celebrating without sleep. Further traditions include acts of daring by local youths coming of age and passionate public professions of friendship and love.

Ibuso is represented as a Masquerade mask, usually that of a fox, sometimes other species both intelligent and bestial, but always red with silver filigree. The Fox is a cunning thief, making a show of innocence despite its underlying intentions.
