Executioner

An executioner is an official government representative tasked with carrying out an Execution, or the state-sanctioned killing of a specific criminal.   Executioners are typically presented with a warrant signed by the crown, the central courts, or whatever other high-ranking governmental entity sanctions the execution of their target. This document prevents the executioner from being legally charged with murder. They then carry out the sentence via whichever state-sanctioned execution method the state designates. Hanging, manual beheading, impaling, exposure, firing squads, and use of the Guillotine have all been common at various points in society. The executioner is then expected to ensure the death of the victim and, in some cases, deliver the corpse to a Necromancer for Corpse Conscription if that is included in their sentence.   Few designated executioners exist today, with recent trends in government putting holds on the death penalty or abolishing it altogether. In many societies that still practice the death penalty, execution is not designated to one specific figure, but rather considered a general duty of either society as a whole or a subset of it (typically law enforcement or the military). For instance, in Dancamort, all Chainguards are expected to be able to deliver the death penalty to those they deem worthy. In the Orokhim clans where stoning is practiced, all able-bodied adults are expected to participate, rather than designating a specific person to carry out the task.
