Magic Flute

The Magic Flute is an instrument of Fey origin, said to have been carved by Telwyth-Teg himself. It is a wind instrument roughly 18 inches in length that can be played either horizontally (like the contemporary flute) or vertically (like the contemporary recorder or bagpipe). Legends claim that its sound is so sweet as to bind both mortals and fey to its player's will.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

If played without attuning to and mentally invoking its magic, the flute produces a whole tone scale when played horizontally and an octatonic scale when played vertically. This, of course, defies the natural laws of acoustics, about which the flute does not seem to care.

History

The Magic Flute appears in some tellings of the Legend of the Caorthannach, as the method by which Telwyth-Teg convinces the Caorthannach to return to her catacombs beneath the Tree of All Seasons.   Few mortals have claimed to hold the Flute, besides the occasional Warlock of Telwyth-Teg himself. It was thought to be in possession of the Council of Wargraves in Cantonova until the mid-1070s, when Sir Mervyn Mergatroyd accidentally admitted to the court that he had not seen it since childhood. No Fool of the Fey has yet reported finding it in the decades since it was supposedly lost.
