Sea Elf

Sea elves are a little-known Elf tribe who live primarily in and around the Near Isles of the Aquatic Kingdoms and the surrounding seas.   The origins of sea elves are unclear. They identify most closely with sun elf culture. However, most of them have blue or bluish-green skin, closer to the appearance of the typical moon elf. Sages generally believe that members of both tribes came together to form this community, likely during the Gaping Hunger in the later years of the Age of Anxiety, combining their love for the sea with a need to adapt to the scarcity of food on land. Over the generations, sea elves have taken on a number of evolutionary adaptations specific to their semi-aquatic nature, including improved swimming abilities and the ability to hold their breath underwater for upwards of thirty minutes at a time.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Sea elves speak Elvish, but with a number of loan words from the Elemental language of Aquan, picked up while defending their territory from sapient aquatic monsters like the sahuagin.

Culture and cultural heritage

Sea elves are the only elven culture without a strong poetic tradition. Instead, sea elven literature tends towards the lengthy, theatrical, and fantastic: fishing stories of catching a particularly large bass will grow collaboratively over the years into epic battles with the king of the sea drakes, for instance. The morality plays of the Near Isles are also a beloved tradition.

Shared customary codes and values

Community support is crucial to the sea elven way of life. There is a common expression in the culture: "Bandwë turca lá lingwë," or "the shoal is stronger than the fish." While immediate family units are important (and many sea elven families have a large number of children close together), a sea elven child will likely see most adults in their community as an aunt or uncle figure.
