Tiunça

A tiunça is a rare type of fungal colony that settles on a frayed thread of a ley line and feeds on its decomposing magic. It is thought to be a recent side effect—or perhaps a minor cause—of the steadily growing power of magic in the world as of late.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tiunça appear similar to other shelf-like mushrooms, such as the chicken of the woods. They have a moist, rubbery fruiting body easily identified by its prismatic gradient of colors, ranging from pinks and reds towards the root to blue, indigo, and violet near the top. The individual "shelves" grow continuously; the largest discovered specimen is nearly three feet in diameter.

Growth Rate & Stages

Tiunça spores seem to be able to detect the arcanomagnetic resonance of ley lines and settle along them. They lie dormant until some part of the ley line breaks or frays, then begin fruiting as they absorb its magic. The lower shelves of the tiunça have extremely beneficial effects when consumed, while the higher shelves can be incredibly deadly. Sages are still working out whether this means that the tiunça begins the decomposition process with beneficial or harmful magic.

Discovery and Relations

The tiunça was first formally identified in Y1102 by a team of xhaosanologists that included Lucretia Britt, marking her first confirmed inclusion on a research paper since her disappearance in the Battle of the Black Keep. However, it may have been previously known to high druids of some Circles of Spores and kept hidden. The research team initially took samples to the Luciferan Synod, believing the tiunça to be a mutation of the bioluminescent fungi of Dancamort; at this time, they appear to be unrelated.
