Utopia Planitia

Utopia Planitia is a massive mid-latitude impact basin on the surface of Mars. Utopia Planitia's most notable feature is a huge underground water-ice reservoir, comparable in volume to Lake Superior on Earth. The exploitation of Utopia Planitia's ice reservoir was one of the main sources of water for terraforming, along with polar water-ice and comet impacts.   Utopia Planitia's ice has been melted slowly over time using open-cycle nuclear reactors which use the ice for coolant. Hundreds of these reactors were employed in an automated network known as the Utopia Planitia Ice Mine, slowly adding liquid and gaseous water into the environment over time. As a result, Utopia Planitia has the highest ambient humidity of any region of Mars, year round. Utopia Planitia also has a high amount of radioactive contamination from a handful of reactors which have melted down due to the lack of upkeep.   At the turn of the 23rd Century, the Pacific Asia Coalition colonized Utopia Planitia when the Transnational Aerospace Security Alliance (TASA) poached their intended target, Melas Colony as a part of Operation Plymouth. The PAC took possession of the Utopian Ice Mines, giving them control of the biggest active source of water on Mars.
