Hyylana

Hyylana is one of the Orphan’s thirteen splinters. It is a remote, arctic place, largely unsettled and fiercely cold, which takes its name from its native people, the Hyyla. A semi-nomadic people, the Hyyla travel with the seasons, dividing their time between the rugged taiga of southeastern Hyylana and the landscape of snowbound peaks and treacherous valleys in the west.   Hyylana is riddled with pre-Shattering ruins. Most of these ruins are practically gone—all that remains of them is a foundation, or a lone wall, or a free-standing smokestack. One, however, has withstood the test of time: Brynhal, a vast, pyramidal fortress in the splinter’s western mountains, within whose walls the Hyyla have built their only permanent settlement.   Further north, beyond Hyylic territory, is a vast expanse of glaciers and snowfields, savagely cold; beyond even that, there is a frozen sea. This savage wilderness was long inhabited only by ghosts and monsters. Then, massive oil deposits were discovered below the seabed, and now Belhacint has established a colony on the frozen coast. Life there is bitter and dangerous—but goddamn if there isn’t a lot of money in it.   Hyylana is linked by pharos routes to Templegarden and Windreach.
