Windreach

Windreach is one of Orphan’s thirteen splinters. There are few vistas in Orphan more fantastical: Windreach is a sea of clouds, where airships flit like birds among the broken pillars of towering cloudbanks, and one can travel for days without sighting land. Unsurprisingly, Windreach boasts Orphan’s highest incidence of auran births.   The cloud-sea is so thick that it’s impossible to spy bottom—if indeed there is a bottom. A few attempts to investigate have been made, but none of them have borne fruit; Windreach is storm-haunted, and most of these expeditions have been forced to turn back, or been lost, due to inclement weather. Even the ones who have managed to avoid storms have not found anything of note. If Windreach has a bottom, it’s miles below the surface, and no one who has reached it has returned to tell the tale.   Windreach is dotted with countless floating chunks of land, islands in the sky, on which the region’s humans make their homes. The largest of these airborne landforms is Stone-on-Wing, the capital city of Cadh Acaelys.   Of the many strange creatures that dwell in Windreach, one is of particular note: the couatl, a winged serpent with an affinity for the region’s ceaseless lightning storms. Couatl blood is a potent magical substance which more or less powers not only Cadh Acaelys, but also Belhacint. Critics claim this resource is the reason behind Belhacint’s recent decision to assume direct control of the region, a decision which has been the cause for a great deal of civil unrest.   Windreach is linked by pharos routes to Hyylana, the Moranneon, and Templegarden.
